    Mystery tool

In our colonies I'm afraid to say as a kid we had many servants. Each kid had its own personal attendant. My wife says I got never over it. All in all its no wonder they took back their independance.

Gentlemen, it seems to me that a discussion on vaccination doesn't belong on this forum.

    Chinese MT reamers .

With a similar problem in the MT2 of my tailstock I was lucky to find a colleague who had a MT2 reamer. I got it on loan. He advised me to be extremely careful in applying pressure as these reamers have a tendency to 'dig in' and destroy the bore. He even advised me to make a small backstop for...

    Squaring Stock

The interesting thing is that most experts mostly point out that you must make sure that the fixed jaw of your vise must be in line with the x-axis travel. But nobody points out that you must also make sure that the bottom of your vise is in line with the x-axis ànd the y-axis travel! On my...

Milled strip bending after milling problem.

Sweet memories of the different points of view and ensuing discussions between designers, manufacturers and purchasers!

Milled strip bending after milling problem.

Small addition: stresses in the material tend to prefer the surfaces, even some residual stresses that remain after the suggested heat treatment for stress relieving. So it is good practice to machine both sides, one side for stress relieve say 1 - 2 mm deep, and the other side for final dimensions.

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

Asking about the economic justification of hobby machinetools is asking the wrong question, as I often have to explain to my resilient wife Eleonora.

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

Cutting metal is in close-up not really cutting but a discontinuous rip-off proces. The sharper the tool the finer the rip-offs, the lower the forces and the smoother the resulting surface. The cutting speed of carbide inserts is roughly up to three times the cutting speed of high speed steel...

    Flywheel question

You could make an aluminium flywheel, turn an outer facial groove and fill the groove with lead. Lead is more than four times heavier than aluminium, and melts at about 330 degrees Celsius, way lower than aluminium which melts at about 660 degrees Celsius.

    Hold a gear for cutting?

The major amount of components in clocks tend to be gears. So if you ask three members of our horological society the best way to hold gear blanks you get at least five different answers. The common straight road to succes is mounting the blank on an arbor, like Brian Rupnow already mentioned...

    setting up for metal spinning

Long time ago, but it seems to me anywhere between 0,5 and 1,0 mm (24 to 18 gauge) aluminiumsheet made into 30 to 60 mm parabolic discs. Mind you that the deformation by full material displacement in spinning is not really comparable with bending.

    setting up for metal spinning

About 50 years ago we often did some spinning in my first machineshop. I remember that it really required quite some force. So it was done on heavy lathes, the instrumentmakers type of lathe just is not strong and stiff enough. And the operator attached himself with a heavy leather belt to the...

DRO install on a Sieg SX2.7

It's about 50 years ago. I don't remember. Maybe the then specific brand doesn't even exist any more. But I'm sure that companies like PTFE.eu and holscoteurope.com and many others can assist you and probably have adhesive PTFE tape for machine building purposes in their productline with...

    Lets Talk 6X4 Bandsaws !

Our instruction 'How to kill a collet' reads 1) don't clean it 2) put a damaged arbor in it 3) don't use the whole length 4) in precision collets use non-nominal size stock. So I would agree with the other comments against loading a collet for only a short length. However given the clear ease of...

    Lets Talk 6X4 Bandsaws !

The gears will eventually need a centerhole to mount them on their shaft, so you put in a hole of diameter 4, 5 or 6 mm or whatever and you turn corresponding stubs on the temporary connecting rod.

    Lets Talk 6X4 Bandsaws !

The method to simply clamp a disc in the sawing machine with the aid of some additional pieces of metal looks is new to me and looks quite straightforward and practical. We - the members of my horological society - use sometimes a bit more cumbersome method. In making gears for clocks it is...
