    Santa brought me steel!

Chris, some scrap metal merchants have handheld PMI testers, you may be able to find one nearby and sweet talk them into a cheap test.

    Craftex 7x8 Lathe

An even more insidious problem with the leadscrew type DRO's is that the backlash is not constant. You might measure the backlash as, say, 4 thou and add/subtract this figure. However, that figure will change depending on the quality of the leadscrew and where in the leadscrew's travel you are...

    Sieg SC4 thoughts and experience?

Hi Ethan, yes it is definitely my next lathe. While a lathe bigger than the C4 would be nice, it won't happen until I move into a new house with more space. As for when? It would have happened last month if I was able to get to Carbatec when they were on special. I'm in no rush as I have the...

Phil, it's so nice to hear from someone that has owned both the C4 and a 9x20. I had been considering a version of the 9x20 available here in Oz but had decided the SC4 was the one in this size class for me. Your feedback reinforces my decision, many thanks. I already have lots of tooling for...

Micro mill desperate help for a novice please

Sorry for the misunderstanding TB, I was not having a *** at you per se, just providing a little extra info and a warning for Paul if he does choose to take this route. My main focus was on the ABB product linked to, which is definitely not suitable for this application.

Micro mill desperate help for a novice please

A circuit breaker could possibly be used but are more complicated than you might think. They typically do not trip at their rated current instantly, sometimes they take many minutes to trip at the rated current(a thermal trip). The ABB S201 linked to above was close to half an hour at the rated...

Micro mill desperate help for a novice please

Hi Paul, 'pot' is just shortform for potentiometer. I would definitely try a replacement pot first, cheap option. Forget the circuit breaker, these are not suitable replacement for fast acting fuses.

Micro mill desperate help for a novice please

Hi Paul, I also believe your motor is OK and the fault lies with the controller. 12VDC is not likely enough to turn the motor over. The fact that the lamp is illuminated with the pot in the off position, and that the brightness does not vary with the movement of the pot, strengthens the case...

Sorry Ethan, I forgot to link to Bob Ackert's excellent supplement to the user manual for the C4/SC4, a goldmine of info: http://www.fenichel.net/papers/Bob Ackert's SIEG SC4 Manual.pdf There's also a massive thread here : http://www.usinages.com/tours/tour-sieg-sc4-t36043.html It is in...

Hi Ethan, as far as I am aware, Ausee is the only stockist in Australia for the SC4, and it's the longbed version (510mm instead of 410mm). Carbatec have the C4, which is identical as far as I know(tho standard 410mm), but it is more expensive. They did have the C4 on special last month for...

Need to drill a long hole..

Would a D-bit not do the same thing? I've used one for deep drilling, admittedly not as deep as in this instance, but I got good results.

I have no direct experience, but this is the lathe I will be upgrading to based on my needs and the very positive reviews I have read on the interweb. There is a pro's and con's list here : http://homeshopmachinist.blogspot.com.au/2011/01/pros-cons-of-sieg-c4-lathe.html And the above author's...

    Strictly IC

Thanks Gordon. Freight to Australia from the US is around $100, which is not too bad, but unfortunately I'm chasing the later issues as I already have the first 5 volumes. Thanks again.

    Strictly IC

Hi Gordon, where are you located? People from all over the world visit this forum, location would be very helpful. Also wondering which are the missing issues? (There are 84 in a complete set) I could be interested in the lot as I have an incomplete collection. Also, what is the condition? Any...

Survey on Sieg 7" lathe - Bazmak

Agree with you Baz. Enjoy my lathe immensely. Captain Jerry's quote in my signature also sums up my position pretty well too. The hollier than thou elitists can go jump. I am planning to upgrade very soon, but it will be another Sieg as that is all my finances can allow. Edit: Sieg, not site...

    Any Jewelers lathe collectors here?

Lathes.co.uk is probably your best bet. I have seen some similar chrome plated watchmakers lathes by Rivett, but nothing with an identical headstock or bed. Worth going thru all the links listed on the following page: http://www.lathes.co.uk/watchmaker/

    Model Engine Builder

Although I do much prefer printed magazines, I do read them on my tablet. In fact, I read them too fast and I hit the back cover of each issue far too soon. Fortunately I've purchased every back-issue digitally too, so I've still got some enjoyable reading ahead :D One nice thing about reading...

    Gear Cutters

Goldstar, I don't think Alan want's to mend it, I believe he wishes to replace it, hence the question whether an involute cutter would have the correct profile. Alan, I briefly researched cutting internal gears (like your ring gear) for a project that ultimately got shelved. From what I could...
