What have you been doing today?

Hang in there Bentwings, it will all work out. Really, I hope you're doing well. John

What have you been doing today?

I agree with you about the silence Lloyd-ss. I live just outside of Erie Pa, right on Lake Erie, I spend alot of time at Elk Creek (One of many tributaries that run into the lake) & see it through the seasons. It's really amazing when it freezes up...the silence. It's almost spooky, but a most...

    Chain Drive Apposed Piston

That's very interesting, similar to the Atkinson. I would be interested in any more pic's or drawings of what you have made. That's an unusual engine & a great runner! You did a fantastic job on it! John

    Shriner parade car

Nice gear! The first? Don has done a great job putting that program together & I have used it quite often in my design work. Looking great Steve, quite the unique project & I'm loving it. John

    Need help with Alibre

I think I would try the "Shell" approach or sweeping an extruded profile (a "Thin" extrusion that allows me to add thickness to my sketch) along a curve that would be the outside profile of the fender (viewed from the side) & then create the side walls/running boards as flat extrudes before I...

Total new-comer to CAD. Which programme to choose.

I think I'll go out on a limb here & agree with "Richard" about Alibre. This seems to be a very popular program here for designing model engines & there are many experienced users here who have done some really nice work with it. See anything that Jason B has created... I've played a little...

2” Scale Saturated Steam Tangye Build

That's a nice looking engine (A big 'un for sure). I'm looking forward to your build, John

Total new-comer to CAD. Which programme to choose.

There is no "Easy" CAD program to learn. They will all take some effort & persistence on your part. It's like teaching yourself how to "Tram" a B-Port mill, or learning how to run a lathe. It's an additional skill you will add to your arsenal & may even find it rewarding or lucrative. It's fun...

    Shriner parade car

I remember seeing these in another post & wanted to ask you about them, thanks for starting the new thread! Those are really nice! I'd be curious to see more about the friction drive if you have any pictures. I recently repaired our snow thrower, replaced belts, bearings, ETC. & that operates...

Can anybody share some examples of the work that you're doing in "Freecad"? John

    3D cad design sequence

Agreed. & a great example as well. "Having assemblies blocked out helps visualize design intent for the smaller pieces." I think this may be overlooked, (this is why creating sub-assemblies is beneficial), where you can hide other assemblies. In my case, I can simply pick an assembly, right...

    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

Very nice! That must have been "Fun" to model it up. A shaky finger on the "Cycle start" button? Wishing you a speedy recovery! John

    3D cad design sequence

What the heck are you talking about!? No, seriously I totally understand your proposed methodology of "Top down" design & as PTC called it "Skeletons" (Using an assembly file with (only) all the important datum planes & defining axis-zzz (like that?). But, that becomes a more advanced...

I admire your persistence (& talent). It looks like you're making some progress! Keep up the good work! John

That's going to be an incredible model! Very WELL done! John

    3D cad design sequence

Yep. I do. I think it's a fundamental exercise in design. I remember drawing gears on paper when I was in tech school. I learned about the addendum, dedendum, single depth...ETC. you have to know these things if you're a designer/engineer. I can also download models off the internet...

    3D cad design sequence

Wow. I don't miss those days at all (Learning ACAD & using a tablet). I have to admit it did feel strange finally ditching the tablet (ACAD R13?), as much as how strange learning 3D was & not having the cross hairs on the screen. John
