    Odds & Ends engine

I have just completed the building of the Duclos Odds & Ends engine. I have it running making it pretty much per the original plan including the carburetor. I had trouble getting it to run unless I partially closed the carburetor intake. I ended up putting a restricting tube in the end of the...

Henry Ford's Kitchen Sink Engine (my version)

I find it amazing the Henry Ford got the engine running at all. He certainly had far less experience with internal combustion engines than many of the folks here who cannot get the engine running. Folks here are familiar with the problems of compression, timing carburation etc. He got it running...

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

I agree. I am no expert on these engines but I think that the cam is the problem. As I said above the valve action starts as soon as the intake hole is starting to open and is closed when it is completely closed. Don't give up yet.

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

I went to bed last night thinking of how I can re-use most of the parts I have made on a four cycle petrol fueled engine Scary what that says about our age. Thirty years ago thinking about an engine design was probably not the first thing that we thought about. :)

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

For what it is worth: I built a Duclos Flame Licker several years ago and could not get it to run for more than a few seconds so I put it away and did not think about it until you got working on this engine. I just took it off the shelf and tried firing it up. It started and ran for about 15...

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

I still wonder about the mass of the flywheel. These things do not have much power. I wonder what would happen if you removed one of the flywheels so that it did not require as much power..

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

Use gasoline anti freeze HEET in the yellow bottle. Red will not work. I used it in my backpacking stove. I am sure that is available in Canada.

    Milling machine vise

OK Thanks. I guess that I will just stick with what I already have. I have a L W Chuck vise which I have been using for several years. It is reasonable quality and from what folks are saying it is probably better that the import vises. I will keep my eyes open for a good used vise.

    Milling machine vise

That is what I was looking at. $98 on eBay. Seems like the same vise is offered under a couple of different names.

    Milling machine vise

Does anyone have experience with the import milling machine vises? There are pretty impressive looking 6" vises available in the $100 to $150 range. I realize that they do not compare favorably with the $600 Kurt vise but most of us home shop hobbyist have a hard time justifying the price...

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

I am not familiar with this engine but with my experience with flame licker engines I do wonder if the engine has enough power to keep the relatively heavy flywheels turning. I am eagerly awaiting the conclusion of this design/build.

South Bend 10K Lathe T-Slot Cross Slide

I certainly wish that something like that was available for my 13" South Bend. Other countries are way ahead of US on incorporating a T slot cross slide.

Works on my Kindle Fire but does not work on my PC

    Boring bar height setting

I made a piece to straddle the lathe V ways so that I have a consistent surface to work from. I just have to make a gauge to set the height between that surface and the lathe tool. For most things just measuring with my 6" rule is close enough but I will make a permanent gauge.

    Boring bar height setting

My conclusion from all of this is that I have to make something which fits onto the bed of the lathe so that I have a consistent surface to index from. I have a QCTP so I have done some of the things suggested but there is no good surface on the lathe carriage to measure from so I guess that I...

    Boring bar height setting

I have done that but when the piece is not round it does not work. I guess that I will have to take the time to make a saddle to fit my lathe bed so that I have a flat surface to measure from.

    Boring bar height setting

After all the years that I have been doing this I should have figured out the proper way. Does anyone have a good method of setting the height of a boring bar? When setting tool height on OD the ruler method works well but that does not work on ID. I have made gages to set tool height relative...

    Carbide insert Torx screw

Unfortunately our town does not have much in the way of industrial supply stores. I live in Grand Rapids MI and the industry is primarily woodworking and office furniture. In the past there were two large General Motors plants and many die shops. There is one industrial supply near me but their...

    Carbide insert Torx screw

I had not tried to cross reference but a 2.5 mm screw is .045 mm pitch and 56TPI = .045 mm pitch and #3 screw is .099 dia =2.514 mm. They are the same thing.

    Carbide insert Torx screw

I think that it is actually 2.5 x 6. I have ordered some of that size of the China variety. They are cheap ($7.99/10 pcs) and if that is the correct size I can order some of the better ones. I was getting the 3-56 specifications from US sites. They may actually both work. #3 screw is .099" OD...
