    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Not much to report. Had a bit of time off to get some other jobs done. Managed to get all the valve components done and sorted all the shim washers out for the tappet clearances. Then I started some more machining on the valve covers, to get some clearance for the oil feed pipes, but managed to...

    Photobucket pro?

Thanks for replies. Steve, yes I noticed yours there as well, never thought to check your pics. I found a bit on Photobucket where if you send one pic to the McDonalds photo album you get three months free on PB Pro. My pic is "pending approval" at the moment, so I'll see what happens.

    Photobucket pro?

I was just about to do an update on my engine when I saw that no images were being displayed on my thread. Seems I've exceeded my Photobucket bandwidth for the month. I noticed that from a normal weekly views of 250, I had around 9000 last week. This turned out to be because my thread was...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Right, the injector is now finished. The trickiest part was trying to get some wires soldered onto the coil. The original coil was turned down a bit on the o/d, and this left 2 coil wire ends sitting flush to the outer surface. I had to cut away a bit of the plastic, under the microscope, to...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Thanks crankshafter, but I'll need the shims to be small washers, 6mm od by 3mm id by 20 thou' thick nominally. Here is an assembly drawing of my proposed injector. The blue bit is the original coil, turned down a bit, and the red thing is the pintle. All the rest is new. It's about 28mm long...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Greg, yes, the obvious method is to shim between the valve and follower. As I've been pondering it though I've been considering how I'm going to get small washers of, say, 1 and 2 thou' thickness. The answer is, of course, set the valves to use a 20 thou' washer from the start, and then work...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

My first idea was to copy a commercial cam, and I had a Chevy V8 cam cut up ready to mount in the machine. Then it suddenly struck me that it wasn't going to work, because the Chevy cam goes through a 1.6:1 ratio increase, on the rocker arm, before it opens the valve. My cam pushes straight on...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

The valves may look a bit unusual. This is my solution to the problem of creating a hydraulic oil lock under a conventional bucket type follower. The valve stem is also the sliding part of the follower. The tops of the valves are screwed on after the springs are installed. The fuel injector is...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Time for an update I think... Been trying to sort out the cams and valvegear, and it's been doing my head in. Think I'll make a vee twin next time! I hogged the cams out on the rotary table, using cuts at 5 degree intervals, then blended the flats in with a file. They didn't look too bad but I...

    January Project of the Month

Wow! That came right out of the blue. I assumed projects have to be completed before getting Project of the Month. I opened up this morning and thought "who on earth's that, looks just like mine!" Your comments are very kind, and very encouraging, and I hope I can keep at it long enough to get...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Sorry about my slow responses, I get sidetracked all the time with other jobs. Longrat, I acquired the alloy from work years ago, no-one can remember where it came from. It is available on line, but it looks quite expensive. I've made the flywheel and ring gear. As I couldn't fit my original...

    Small fuel injector source?

I have seen the OS injection system before, but not read much on how it works. If the check valve is 9psi then this is obviously a low pressure type system. It also looks a bit basic in how it meters the amount of fuel, as it says you may have to trim more fuel in as the daytime temperature...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Alexandre, you are welcome to any drawings I have, but I don't work rigidly to my drawings. I'll draw so much of a part and then start machining, and I'll do little tweaks as I go along. My drawing file for the engine is just a mess of bits and bobs, and sketches and hand drawings etc. I only...

    Small fuel injector source?

Crankshafter, that Canadian site looks good. I will contact them to see if they can measure the injectors, they look small but it's hard to get a sense of scale from their pics. Alexandre, If I end up having to make the injectors then we can combine resources if you wish. I don't mind doing all...

How do you machine such fine details please?

While I think, the inside of the throttle body was done in a similar way, but the depth of cut varied too,so on the cad you're plotting x,y and z. Maybe leave the z axis till you've played with the x & y?

How do you machine such fine details please?

Hobby, just dug this pic up, from when I machined the ellipse on the front of my throttle body. It shows the individual cuts made using George's last method in his post. Unfortunately, without CNC there's no easy way to generate these type of shapes. You just chobble away what you can on the...

    Small fuel injector source?

Anyone know what the smallest commercially available petrol fuel injectors are, or to what they are fitted? I need a couple to fit to a 1/4 scale v8, but I'd really rather not spend weeks and months developing something if I can get them off the shelf. I've been searching for days but come up...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Thanks for the replies, they spur me on to aim higher all the time. I'm still on a steep learning curve. 12 months ago I wouldn't have thought it was possible to make something like this. And if I hadn't seen Steve's V8 and George's gearbox then I wouldn't be anywhere near the standard I'm at...

    1/4 scale V8, first project.

Another belated update. I've been messing with the oil pump but eventually got it to what I thought would work. I cobbled it up to some pipework and gave it a whirl with the drill. It seemed to pump a reasonable volume of oil, so I rigged up a pressure gauge and tried again. 200psi! I suppose...
