Wanted bill of materials for Satra O-440

Years ago I bought the plans for Bruce Satra's O-440 engine. I got both the drawings and the machining instructions to build when I retired. I finally got around to pulling them out and found that the bill of materials was missing. Bruce is long gone now and I have had no luck tiring to find out who now has the rights to the plans to try to get them. Any one have a set of these plans that I can get a copy of the bill of materials from? Please contact me to make arrangements for me to get a copy. Cost etc.

Hi Ultralight. I don't have a bill of material for the engine, but would you be willing to make copies of the plans you have? I bought an M-5 and M-1 kit from Bruce years ago and kick myself for not getting at least the plans for his other engines like the M-2 and 0-440. He was a great guy to talk with about engine stuff and metal casting.

I never expected anyone to reply saying they had the plans. LOL. Does anyone have the M-2 plan set? That is the unicorn I have been after since Bruce passed. I am currently making molds from notes Bruce and I talked about years ago, with help from another person who was going to carry on Bruce's work when he passed. I have about half the mold work done for M-5/-1/-2 cylinders and trying to secure an ingot of the alloy Bruce did his castings in. I have done castings for myself, so have the proper equipment. I have already cast some M-5 slave connecting rods from new molds I made.

Didn't Paul Knapp end up with the Morton heads/castings etc??

From what I can piece together talking with about 7 different people... Mike White tried to keep thing going with another person, he ended up with a bunch of parts and castings, but not much in molds. I'm in communication with the other person, but haven't asked permission to reveal their name. They started the VernalEngineering. com website when Bruce passed, but the site was abandoned a couple years later (I picked up the domain name last week, just in case). I had emailed Mike when the site disappeared to see if he was going to abandon things and had any castings to sell, but he quit responding after the second reply to me. I sent an offer to him to buy out what he had, but I guess he didn't take kindly to it. Bill Reece got the molds for the cylinder and prop hub, it was the original M5 cylinder that Bruce had modified to make the Super 7 cylinder. As far as I have found it was the only M5 mold and had been heavily modified. There is a chance that a place in Utah has some of the fixturing for making small parts like bushings and such, but haven't received a response from them. I have no clue who holds the actual rights to any of Bruce's stuff, his wife passed before he did and I never asked Bruce if he had children. We usually just talked machining and engines. I would like to make the VernalEngineering site a tribute to Bruce's work, including making his old original site available for those who want it for reference (and give credit to Ron Chernich too). Also, there were a lot of people who made parts for the engines that Bruce recommended on his site that I would like to bring forward again for people interested in the engines. What I don't want is to do it and step on any toes of people who think they have exclusive rights to anything. I made a new mold for the connecting rod waxes a few years ago, and started the cylinder mold but things came up and I didn't finish it. I ran across all of it moving stuff up to a new shop where I can do casting work again and it rekindled the interest. I hadn't heard about Paul Knapp getting the molds, but maybe he worked something out with Mike White?

From what I can recall Paul knapp took over the pratt and whitney r1830 and r985. Last time I looked Paul was still offering all the castings and some machined parts for both engines. I believe your right with saying Mike White took over the morton engines. I never managed good communication to get castings from Mike. I do have a full set of m5 castings from Bruce and also the r1830 and r985 castings.

I will have a look over weekend bruce had sent me a couple sets of plans when I bought a number of castings from him.

Thank you in advance for looking. The R series of engines are beautiful but it takes me a couple years to do a single cylinder engine at times. I can't imagine the age I would be at if I attempted something of that magnitude.

Unfortunately Paul Knapp is currently out of complete casting sets for the R-985 and R-1830. I believe he may still have some R-985 singles available as well as quite allot of finished parts for all 3.There doesn’t seem to be any great rush to cast any more.
Regarding the M5, Paul has some of the dies for it. But not all. I don’t know of any plan to produce more castings.

Thank you for the information. Every bit fills in a little more of story. I have never spoken with Paul Knapp, I'm going to have to reach out to him.

I just realized how bad this thread was hijacked. I started and new one in the Engines from castings.
