I know its way over kill ( But what's the point in designing anything if you can't over design it???) - but - why not an inexpensive CNC drive?
There are a lot of instructable articles on doing this with GRBL boards (think $35 motherboards that drive 3D printers) and inexpensive stepper drivers...
