Hey, all you members in Upstate NY! I will be traveling to Upstate N.Y. over the holidays to visit family. I travel I81 from home to NY, I88 to Sidney/Mt. Upton, I88 and I90 to North Bay and Schenectady.
I will be in Mt. Upton/Sidney, then North Bay, a commissary/BX run to Ft. Drum (retired AF), Schenectady for a wedding New Years Eve, and back to Mt. Upton, and on back to TN.
Maybe, even a run to McLain/Lansing for Christmas Day.
Please share your metal suppliers/tool stores that may be within a side trip from these locations. I don't have many local sources here in E. TN to find metal for projects or decent tools either, and shipping is usually a deal killer.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well now... First off it is WINTER up there. Seein as how you are from East Tennessee you migh not have quite the right picture of WINTER. You will see this stuff called SNOW. It is an evil thing, not that nice fluffysweet stuff of Hollywood and childrens stories. Before you go looking for suppliers you should probably be seeking someone from the area that is SNOW certified to transport you so you, and your car both survive.

I grew up in upstate NY and I am glad to be in South Texas this time of year. The time to viisit Upstate NY is in July and August when it finally doesn't frost at night.

Right off I-81 near Scranton is a Harbor Freight in Dickson City. The National Historic Site: Steam Town USA is also right in the area.

First off, it's 20 deg F here, and 4" of snow on the ground. From what I've seen on the Weather Chamnnel, it's a bit warmer up there.
Second, forgot to say that is where I grew up, so I'm used to that kind of weather.
We have a Horrible Freight just down the road, but they never seem to have much I need/want there. No machining tools other than the horrible red braised carbide lathe tools.
There is an MSC catalog store and Fastenal stores near, but they are pricey if they have what I want.
I have seen posts from the Syracuse and Watertown areas on the list, just thought I'd make contact and find a trasure!

Chuck,

Since your traveling all that distance, A small detour to Muncy, PA and Grizzly would probably be able to be squeezed in. When you get to I80 head west to I180 and then I180 north to Muncy.

I think it's a well worth place to stop on such a long trip. ;)

Grizzly, now that's an idea. Never thought of them. Any other suggestions?
School has been closed here all week, and likely to be closed the rest of the week, at least tomorrow. 3" of snow changing to sleet and freezing rain by morning.Friday was scheduled as a half day. So far though, nothing that would have closed school when I was a kid back in Sidney, NY area.

Okay - I guess you have retained your snow certification.
