Hello everyone, like the title says it's 1:45 AM here and I have been in bed since 10:00 pm. I just took another lortab and Valium to see it this will help and have a heating pad going. I Had a cervical injection this morning at 10:00pm. that is suppose to help with the pain going through my right arm down to my thumb and forefinger. That is better but it is now but now the pain has worked it's way up to the right side of my head and jaw and the headache that I have been getting is really on the high pain level side. Looks like it will be a long nite for me. Oh and the cause of all of this pain is a large herniation at the C5-C6 and a bulged disk between the C6 and C7. I have some problems going on in my lower back also but they are focusing on the cervical area first but the is the most server. It happened 6 weeks ago and they want to continue with physical therapy and these injections for a minimun of 6 months. In the mean time all I can do is drive to work, put in my time and come home. No lifting, pulling, pushing....etc. They told me explicitly that I can't work in my machine shop till I get better. I still haven't gotten a definitive answer of at what that "get better" really means. This is the time I usually get back into my shop and continue on with where I left off last spring.

I know one of the first things I am going to build once I get some spare cash is going to be the powered draw bar. No way can I reach up above my head and crank on the draw bar. Another thing I am going to have to do is figure a way to rig up a hoist to help me life the 3 and 4 jaw chucks on and off the lathe. The 5c isn't to heavy so I think I can manage that. The next problem of course is being able to pull hard enough and push hard enough to get the D1-4 mounts tight enough and same going for the chuck jaws.

I wasn't to active on the board this summer, between work demanding extra time during the week and most weekends and trying to keep on top of all the day to day chores that summer brings with my log home and new landscaping needs there just wasn't time for the shop or getting on the board. It's winter time again and I will be contributing as much as I can and offering any help that I can.

Rick it was refreshing to come back after being off this summer and see that the board is still being run with the same philosophy that it originated with. Excellent job and thanks again for providing us with what I consider the best place on the net for those of us who love to build our small hobby engines. I see that over the summer a lot of new people have joined. Some just starting out building their first models, which is where I was a year ago when I found this site. And several new very talented experienced builders. Your dream has definitely taken off and that's because you and the rest of the moderators have done an excellent job of keeping it on track. I know it must take a lot of effort on everyone part.

Sorry for my whining in the beginning, I just had to have someone to talk to and this is where it ended up.

I am following all the treads I can and really look forward to seeing more of the new builds and pics in progress....The hints and tips is also one of my favorites. And I have a lot of reading to catch up on the summer activities. Keep em coming guys, they really motivate me to get better so I can going in my shop....hopefully soon.

I think the lortab and Valium is starting to kick and and the heat seems to be helping the pain going up the side of my head so maybe I can at least relax.

Catch up with everyone later.

If it's any comfort, I had a similar problem with C4-C5 several years back. The cervical traction device and exercises the physical terrorist prescribed eventually worked and as long as I'm aware of how I'm doing things, I've managed to recover almost complete mobility. I still can't work over head without my arms going to sleep, but I can deal with that.

I avoided the steroid shots through shear gut determination and some serious tooth grinding..... not something I'd recommend to anyone else.

It does get better, but it can be a slow and painful go.

A longer lever will multiply your force on the chuck wrenches. Getting the chucks lifted up I would look into some of the cheap hoists offered by Harbor Freight (I assume you live in the USA).

The Houston Metal Club web site had some good articles on DIY chuck hoists and such on it when I went looking a while ago.

I hope you get better quickly. I know the all-night can't-sleep pain myself. Wouldn't wish it on anybody.

Everyone thanks for the responses, I hope they will allow me to get back to my shop soon. This happened in a very freak accident at work so it's WK claim and I have to follow what they want. I have a Chevalier mill that is in great shape wear wise for the ways but the head is junk and I was going to move the ENCO head off that mill and see if it would fit on my Chevaliar. I just rebuilt that head last winter. Or maybe I can trade the Chevaliar for a mini mill with and R8 spindle and a mini lathe. I stated out with a Mini Lathe and regret ever getting rid of it.

Glad to see you back Bob. Was wondering what you have been up to. Take care of yourself and get well. The machines are going no where. Use the downtime to work on designs and the simple jobs. Good to see you back and hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Tim it's good to be back. I am in the shop right now day dreaming about things I can do. I am thinking I have a lot of drills and end mills I can sharpen, maybe a little lite clean up. I also have some small parts for the I started last year. My wife has volunteered to come down to help me change chucks when I need to so I might take her up on it. She lifts rocks around here on a daily basis as well as I could on my best days.

I am actually feeling good right now and I worked from home all day so that was good. I don't trust myself right now to do anything with the machinery because I have been on the lortab pills for the last 24 hours. Hopefully Friday will be a good day and I might do some small stuff.

Take care.

Hi Malcom thanks for your concern and rightly so. You are correct and about the drugs not mixing, I rarely take a drink now days and I sure don't like the feeling on the drugs. I intend to stay away from the power switches if I am out there with pain killers. Right now it's comforting to sit out there.:)

Hi Kenny and thanks. I have over 500 hours on that 4110 now and it sure has done a ton of work around here. I still haven't hooked up a spool valve to the rear hydraulics. Maybe get to the next spring.....:)

Bob,

I hope this passes on ASAP. In the meantime do what the medico's say. Some of them actually know what they are talking about.
