TIME ON MY HANDS

I want to make a model,
I want to see it run,
This hobby seems the place to be,
A hobby full of fun.

First of all I buy a lathe,
And then I buy a mill,
Oh joy says I! - and then I think???
Oh s$$t I need a drill!!!

I put some metal in the chuck,
Oh how it is exciting,
I can feel the metal bug,
As it begins it’s biting.

Well damn and blast,
Of course you fool,
To cut some metal, you also need,
A thingy called a cutting tool.

I’m ready now, I’m good to go,
I’m really on a blinder,
Well bugger me what more, I cried,
………???
I’m off to buy a grinder.

The tool is ground the shape is good,
It even fits the holder,
Contact, contact, switches on,
I wish I could be bolder.

The lathe is running,
My first cut,
The swarf is flying free,
The whole of it has come to this,
I gotta take a pee.

I mill around to make a square,
Am I getting anywhere?
I bore, I face, I turn, I lap,
And still the metal looks like crap.

Oh how I wish I’d read more books,
On giving metals shine,
The thing that pleases me the most,
This crappy lump is mine.

This saga is a long one,
It could go on and on.
But I have metal waiting,
A waiting to be cut,
So I will leave you wondering,
Where the rest of it I put.

Feel free to add to the saga.

Best Regards
Bob

Oh for parts to be simple
my soul to be free
what I really need now
is to build a cnc

Motors are needed
to make the thing move
then I need software
to program the groove

Couplers and ball-screws
to prevent back-lash
otherwise my parts
may go in the trash

Pulleys and belts
A supply for power
the cost keep rising
it seems by the hour

I am doing this I say
to make parts with ease
is this really a Hobby
or a mental disease ?

progress moves on
completion not far
my money not spent
drinking in a bar.

happy I am
life could be worse
but instead of machining
here I write verse.

To keep your fire burning
don't stop your spindle turning
and one day you'll find you have
the engine for which you've been yearning

I have nothing to add but this is very entertaining.

As I awoke this joyous morn
All bright and starry-eyed,
I ran out to my work shed
And threw the doors wide.

There perched upon my bench
My trusty lathe and sturdy mill,
Beckoning me to come
And have my way, as I will.

As I ran my loving hands
O’er the metal ways,
I felt a sudden pain
Which awoke me from my glaze.

Behold this bright crimson hue
Now coating my machine,
What fool worked here last,
And left these chips to clean?

A can of oil
And wad of rag
Will help to ease your sorrow
Get the bugger nice and clean
For a flying start tomorrow

I'm sitting here trying to imagine what a psychiatrist would have to say about a bunch of old men who write poetry about their machine tools.

Erm..... let's not go there!

Sometimes you have to use the right half of your brain just to see if it's still there.

Ummm.................., I wondered about that after I'd posted. ::) But who cares if it adds to our enjoyment. ;)

Not forgetting............., George is entertained. :p

First I patched the roof
and then I fixed the floor
When I headed for the shop
my wife said "fix the door"

So I got my tools
the door got fixed
Now to the shop!
No, that got nixed

One more task
yes just 'one more'.
My honey says
"Go to the store"

There is no end to honey do's
You'll never get them done!
There is just one thing I have to ask:
When do I get to have some fun?

(two items; #1 none of this is from personal experience.
#2 I have my wife's permission and she contributed the last part)
