machine made cut nails have been with us almost as long as the USA itself.
My post civil war home was built with these nails. These days the modern wire nail is the norm. to my surprise cut nails, in several forms are still made today.
There is a factory that has survived making cut nails for 180 years.

Tremont Nail is a couple towns over from me (in Mansfield MA) and very close to the RC Helicopter club I belong to.
Lots of old mill buildings in Mansfield and surrounding towns. One of them housed a HUGE chocolate factory and you could smell it for miles. Wonderful aroma, better than cutting oil!

My town was founded by the swedes. and there was a nail mill a couple miles from my house. nothing left but a small museum the remnants of one rusty old machine and the canal. Not even sure if the museum is op these days due to government cutbacks.

The cabinetmaker's way of simulating the look of a cut nail is to hammer- fold over the two edges of a circular nail head into a "T" shape and drive it in, looks just like the real thing.
