Got bored waiting on the mill I need to get flat cuts on my paddleducks engine, so it is put up for now.

So got itchy and wanted a one day project and this is what I came up with. Here is my progress so far. Made out of mystery steel that was given to me by a friend. Really eats up the carbide bits though. I also tried hss and it last one pass and the tip was gone:mad:. So back to carbide it was and 3 bits later(all sides used), so 9 tries later here we are. Put in 4 jaw and bore offset hole, and used grinder to level off. Used file for shaping, along with 320, 600, 1200 grit sandpaper. Then a quick polish

Was thinking of trying to turn into a ring gun like the Le petit model. Will prob be inactive and use dummy rounds, but would look cool as a table piece.

When turning this steel , it was of steel color, but once it got hot it would start shooting off copper colored strands. Also became rather gummy or hard to work with. Anyone know why? Too hot? Even at slow speed it would be copper colored.

By the sound of things, the steel has been heat treated. This would account for the"copper" coloured swarf coming off, and the wear on the carbide tips. The copper colour is actually caused by the heat generated in cutting.

Paul.
