If you haven't tried bar stock from (speedymetals.com) it is certainly worth a shot. Super selection, will provide from 1" or longer in length. Great prices, Delivery and reasonable shipping cost. Not sure if they ship outside the US or not, if interested you can contact them via their web site.

I would add OLM into the consideration list.

Very similar prices. One distinction is for Canucks is OLM reduces the (unfortunately still UPS) dinger fees, whereas Speedy shipping 'is what it is' outside USA. Speedy carries cast iron, OLM does not.

I hope you USA folks appreciate how fortunate you are to have 'small quantity' resources like these & the likes of McMaster Carr etc. We have overpriced & limited selection Metal Supermarket.

Recently tried OLM with the same order for identical materials as ordered from speedymetals and their prices are almost identical EXCEPT their shipping charge was 2X for the same items. So for now I will stick with speedymetals.

For builders who build small engines and like cast iron. SPEEDY is one of the few suppliers who have cast iron smaller than 1" diameter. They have iron stock down to 5/8" diameter. A big difference when doing engines with less than 1/2 inch bore.

Good service tool

Interesting. Did you inquire or eventually figure out why? Maybe the Speedy location was physically closer to you than OLM for example? I'm not promoting, just curious because it looked like they use same shipping service inside USA.

Speedy is closer to my location, they are in Wisconsin and I am located in southern Mo. Believe olm is located in California but not sure. Many mail order businesses make a ton of money on shipping. I Know this as I have frequently shipped via USPS in if it ships boxes and envelopes for quite reasonable amounts. Some suppliers are quite willing to ship at their cost, most are at least 2x their out of pocket. LMS in California ships very reasonable as do some others. You just have to look and compare.

I have used speedy for quite some time and very satisfied.
Lately found 12" aluminum bar stock @ amazon reasonable and free shipping.

Have also found some good deals on cutting inserts on Amazon

LMS shipping costs are quite reasonable, even all the way down here in Australia. Speedymetals however, are beyond the joke. I wanted a 1" round bar x 1 foot long and the metal was something like $12, the shipping they quoted me was something like $250... ended up getting a 2 foot length through Amazon for about $40 including shipping in the end.

Sounds like a business opportunity. The interesting thing here is that these businesses got started because people wanted a better way to buy small quantities. We use at least one of those businesses at work as you seldom need full bars to do maintenance machining. These resources actually do a lot of business to business transactions.

I'm a fan of Discount Steel. Whenever I purchase materials I cross shop OLM, SM, Metals Supermarkets & DS. I usually find DS to have the lowest total cost.

MS is almost always the most expensive but sometimes I still buy there. This is because they have an outlet in Indianapolis and I can drive there (no shipping charges).

Evidently I've just drawn the short straw with Speedy. First order took almost six weeks and they acted like it was an inconvenience to talk to me when I called to ask. Second order came much faster, but piano wire looked like it spent a year in the rain. I'm glad everyone else has good luck them, and I'll probably try them again, but first couple of experiences were pretty rough.

Discount Steel Quoted $38 to ship Fed Ex 2 lbs 2 pieces Aluminum tube

If it was not cut in half it would be $467

Some business deserve to fail.
