Maybe that's a very early version of a matter/anit-matter engine just disguised to look like a steam engine :big: :big: You gotta wonder who thought up combining Spock with such an engine, and in victorian clothes to boot !! Not a combination i would have come up with...logical or not.

To Boldly Go where no Steam Engineer with pointy ears and an enigmatic look has gone before.

I think they, (Spock and his fearless leader), had to go back in time and kill some poor woman because if they didn't her offspring somehow ensured Hitler won WWII, and they would not exist.
