I recently visited the Electricity Museum in Lisbon, Portugal. This is a decommissioned coal-fired power plant that demonstrates how Lisbon's power was generated in the first half of the 20th century. The machinery is all in place, and well documented with English as well as Portugese.

I have created a photo gallery http://www.pbase.com/kvom/lisbon_electricity_museum&page=all if anyone is interested in seeing the boilers and other machinery in the plant.

Highly recommended if you happen to visit Lisbon.

Very nice ! The museum did a GREAT job on the display showing the goodies with their covers removed. Something you RARELY see !! Thm: Thanks for the pictures !

I'd love to be able to tour a working power plant, coal or oil fired.

I essentially get the basics of an oil fired plant by volunteering in the engine room on a Victory cargo ship:

Very cool, ok HOT place to be on our cruises when the ship is steaming. Lots of eye-candy :D
