Reading Tin Falcons post got me thinking as a keen shooter here in the UK i get lots of spent cartridges and rifle brasses every year some of my cartridges from my shot gun find there way into plant pots so i don't have to use as much compost also as many sit upright they hold water to keep moisture longer. As for rifle brasses I have not really found a use for them although i still have the one i used to shoot my first deer I turned it into a key ring by flattening the neck and drilling a hole in it to accept a split ring. Has any body else found a use for these items either in modeling or around the house please let me know.

When I was a kid, my dad had a 32/40 rifle which used brass cartridges. I found that if you knocked the primer cap out and inserted a 3" nail through from the open end, they made a great end for a wooden arrow.

At the last Phoenix shoot they had some .50 cal made up into pens.

Necked rifle calibre cases make dandy handles for some hand tools - the 30-06 on my small, home made jeweller's saw springs to mind. .32, .38 or 9mm pistol cases make good terminal posts for things you want to hook up to a battery charger.

Smash the bullet end flat in the vise and you have a nice tool with an integral handle for cleaning files. Pushing the flattened end along (not across) the file teeth will quickly cut matching teeth in the soft brass. Voila, a cleaning tool perfectly fitted to the file.

Someday I'm going to take some of the heap around here and try melting it back into ingot.

That's what I do. The cases are about the most expensive part of a cartridge and the only part you're left with. I get my money's worth out of them!

I thought about reloading but as usual i have to many hobbies and not enough time to do them all. So find it easier to nip to the local shop and buy fresh. And usually end up buying something else at the same time that i don't need....
