Hi Marv. A question for you about your 'uphill roller'.

I thought this would be a good desktop toy for a friend of mine so have machined up the conical bit with 30 degree included angle. However, trying to use different spreads and gradients with the rails, I still cannot get it to defy Irish gravity. It just runs downhill.

So to the question: what angle have you machined your cones to, what is the gradient and how far apart are the rails at the wide end? Is there some simple way of working out what the gradient should be and the splay on the rails for a particular cone?

Oh well, 2 questions but counting isn't my strong suit.

Dave,

By analyzing the motion of the CG (Center of Gravity) of the cone, one arrives at a simple mathematical expression that must be satisfied for the device to operate. I've attached my writeup of this derivation.
