Hi would the gears from a myford lathe fit the portass model s and does anyone have a chart for it

Hi,if you google lathes then the site lists all lathes made worldwide
Portass is there with all the models and info you need with photos
As for gears you need to know the gear geometry on the portass and the Myford. If you are changing all the gears it may be possible to use any
as long as they are all the same.Or you make some, buy some etc etc

20DP ( includes Myford) and getting down to Screwcutting in the Lathe by Cleeve.

  • IMHO it is no earthly use reading a chart and not, at the end of the day, not being able to use the information.
A bit like a dog chasing a car, once it catches the car, what does it do with it?

I'm Google to research on Google again to see if I can find some more information but not been successful up to yet finding out how the gears are set up thanks for your help guys in still learning

google lathes .uk.com.SAcroll down the long list and click portass lathes
Click on model s. Lots of photos and description of the lathe and changegear setup
Full set of gears listed as supplied as std with the lathe 16DP

I must apologise if I have given the wrong diametrical pitch.

If it is 16DP, then there is the difficulty in obtaining gears. Oddly, I still have a few ex my early Drummond 4" Round bed which I recall buying for £9.

I have just done the calculation and the change gears are coming out at 20dp so I'm not sure whats going on there if they were changed by someone else in the past. this is the first time ive done this so could be me doing it wrong I'm doing it by taking the diameter in inches then getting the teeth number and adding 2 to that then dividing the total teeth by the diameter. Thanks guy for sticking with me I'm going to be a pain just while I pick this up.

If you have 20DP as I guessed, you have the availability of plentiful supplies from places like RDG who succeeded Myford

Really if you can get things to mesh on your banjo( not play it), it doesn't matter a hoot and all will be well.

If push comes to shove you can alter the paired gears to take different sizes of DP. If you have a say 127 transposing gear in 20DP, you might have trouble fitting it. That is when one can use 63 or even 21 to do metric threads.

You can also play 'silly buggers' with gears for rather odd divisions. I've got a rather exotic small dividing head ex George Thomas( Workshop Techniques' which will do most things-- apart from tide tables for HongKong harbour! As I said to JC Steam on the old blower, I also have a child's plastic protractor.

Thanks for the help guys this a great forum. I'm going to get ordering some more gears and also order the book you suggested so I can get my head round the gears.
