newbie here again with vise ??

i was just looking, do you guys think a person could adapt this vise to a atlas 6"lathe in vertical position and do light milling ? grizzly-G1064 Cross-Sliding Vise

The Grizzly G1064 vise ad does
say it will work for light milling. The adjustable gibs should allow
for that, but it would have to be limited to LIGHT MILLING.

I have one of those, and trust me---they will not do for light milling. They have a tremendous amount of backlash, and are really only suitable for a drill press vice.----How do I know?---Well, not long after I purchased my lathe a couple of years ago, I had the same thoughts as you.--it seemed logical. I think I paid about $35.00 for mine. You really do GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!! Brian

I started with it on my HF 7x10 lathe and had to make a mount 1" high. The attachment mounted to the adapter and then the adapter mounted in place of the compound. Then I put it on my Craftsman 12" and just used a T-nut and bolted it right to the compound in place of the tool post.

Worked fine with both but you have to go easy on it and you are limited to about a 2"x3" piece to work on. While there are limits, you can do more than having nothing. I don't have a mill (yet) and everything I have made used this attachment.

I have the same one 'Vette has (it's made by Taig), and it performs better than it looks. I have a milling machine, but still use the little attachment on my lathe regularly.
