On my regular troll of eBay last week I spotted this collection of stuff labeled as "COLLETS BRASS JAWS & MISC JUNK - MACHINIST TOOLS"

The pile cost me less than $10 to my door. The gem of the pile is the tapping block. I was about to make one then I saw this collection. Anyhow, I know what some of the other obvious bits are. I'm trying to figure out what the 4 brass pieces are. Also what the spindle came from. The big collet looking thing below the tapping block is a spindle of some sort. It has a Morse #2 taper and a slotted hole to insert a drift. Also there are three small collets along the top of the ruler between the 5 and 10 inch marks I cannot identify. Lots of other groovy goodies. I love junk buckets!

TWMASTER, tried to fix your picture (Link was broke) and managed to totally mess it up. Sorry...

Mike,
The spindle part looks like it could be a R8 to MT2 adapter. Is there a slot down one side? Do you have a R8 spindle you could try it in?

A couple of the tiny collets look like they could have come from some hand-held tool, maybe something holding scribe points or the like. Or the spindle of a Dremel. Or maybe even watch-maker collets (WW?). Pure speculation, of course.

The larger bits below the ruler: The two on the left look like toe clamps. The other four pieces look the the halves of blanks for a casting mold. Hard to say without a different angle to look at.

Interesting find. Should keep people guessing for a while :D

The two leftmost brass pieces look remarkably similar to the rests in my lathes steady.

R8 doesn't use external threads...looks like a 5C to MT adapter.

The threads are too small on that spindle (or adapter) to be 5C. Also there is no slot.

The collets are too big to be Dremel....

I knew what the toe clamps were. The ligting makes them look brassy but they are steel. The 4 brass bits in the middle are of three sizes. The two on the left are identical. One is upside down.

Also found a dovetail holder for an indicator in the lot...

It's kinda like an early Christmas! :D

The small collets appear to be Erickson collets which would be used on some larger air-powered die grinders and similar.

The larger "collet" looks to be an adapter as already mentioned, and certainly looks the part of a 5-C. Possibly a homemade adapter to fit an oddball drawbar.

Half the fun is trying to determine the use of some of this stuff and what type of work the prior owner had spent his career doing.

I was thinking the threads are for a hollow draw bar to hold the adapter in the spindle, then possibly a solid draw bar down the middle for Morse Taper collet. I don't have any 5C collets for reference but it looks like an R8 taper, I thought the 5C taper was shorter. But without a pin slot it won't fit an R8 spindle.

Still an interesting find whatever it turns out to be.

Like I said it's not 5C. I have 5C collets for my spindexer. Dang, that would have been a handy thing to stick in the spindexer too...

The end of that 'spindle' thing only has about a 1/4" non-threaded hole at the threaded end. The threads are much smaller than 5C. And there is no slot. What you do not see in that pic is the slot in the thing for a drift to knock tools out of the spindle.

Thanks for the tips on the other collets. If somebody needs them I'll happily pass them along for the cost of postage. I'm moving in about 8 weeks so everything non-essential is going to go away.

The one's I'm most puzzled over are the 4 brass parts that all look similar...
