With most of the kids out the house we needed smaller wheels. Daddy wanted a diesel for fun. The boss at the local diesel electric (there's not a hope I'll do a thing to that car myself) told me not to get a common rail type and my best bet would be anything with a VeeDub 1.9 TDI is what I should be looking for. So taking a friend to drive the Kombi back we set off for Pretoria to visit my big son and take advantage of the family discount rates at the hotel where he is a chef. In Pretoria there are miles of car dealers along 2 roads in particular.
In the end I came home driving alone in the nicest condition AND cheapest of about 50 VW 1.9 TDIs we looked at, a 2001 VW Jetta (Bora to some). First impression was the economy, worked out to 5.52 litres/100km, mostly highway driving with some missions in the Old South Johannesburg. We are lucky in this small town to have a well run licensing department with next to no queues mid month so accomplished the roadworthy and registration in 30 minutes all told.
I'm still getting used to the way the car drives, turbo lag mostly. The little diesel wants to rev (redline at about 4700 only) but makes good tourque low down.
Anybody else enjoy driving a small Diesel?
