Well I've officially done my first little job on my machines I know it's no big deal but I feel good that I was making parts again.
I had this band saw an old sears that had a busted bevel gear. I couldn't get a replacement for it so it has been setting off to the side in my garage for the past 4 years as I did work in the machine shop any more. So today I decided to fix it for my first poject.
I ground up a gear tooth for a fly cutter and turned up a blank and mandrel and cut the gear. I installed it and everything worked out. Feels good to know I can still cut gears after 7 years out of the shop. It was a good day for me.
Just wanted to share.

Making a bevel gear, even with a commercial cutter is no small feat! With your own cutter, I'd say it's quite an accomplishment!

Does feel good to make something useful, doesn't it?

Looks like you have not lost the touch. I can only admire work like that. Still quite a bit down the road for me I'm afraid.

Nice job..

Parts were still available a year ago.

The little gear was $32.00 and the big bevel gear is around $100..

Think of how much money you save to spend on something else. ;D

Somewhere I saw a picture where someone converted their saw to a direct drive by mounting a dc variable speed motor on the side of the saw.

Plus I would of lost out on the pleasure of doing it myself! ;D
I kind of figured the craftsman sales person I spoke to just didn't want to be bothered looking it up.
Anyway it is fixed now and works fine again.
