Hello all,
I work in a 'Man Cave' in the hills east of Perth, Western Australia. Usually on much larger engines such as old diesel Listers and an old Petter petrol engine. I have a fully equipped workshop and am now starting into building much smaller scale engines and ancillary equipment, mainly aimed towards steam. I hope to post some photos and updates at a later stage once I have progressed further with the projects. HMEM is a great forum with some great people and always a pleasure to visit and spend time browsing. Hats off to the moderators and all the valuable contributors.
Cheers from sunny Australia, Norman.

G'day Norman,

Welcome to the forum, looking forward to seeing some pictures of the man cave and projects.
Yep plenty of great people here from all around the globe, also lots of Aussie members as well

Welcome Norman! I'm jealous of your "fully equipped man cave" as i'm still building my own man cave as SHMBO is demanding the right to park her car in the garage! Can you believe it? It's only been 10 years! There's some great designs around for steam engines I've found through lurking everywhere, what models were you thinking of starting with?

cheers from Melb, Ian

Hi Ian 'aarggh',
I am starting to build a pretty simple horizontal, single cylinder, conventional steam engine of my own design. It is a fairly large engine measuring 440mm long, 200mm dia flywheel, bore 40mm dia and stroke 60mm. A pretty heavy lump when it is finished but I figured I would start big and work my way smaller seeing as I am used to machining much larger stuff most of the time. Other items in the pipe line are a double acting boiler feed pump and possibly a hydrokinetic lubricator. Also just thinking about a duplex, steam operated pump. Plenty of ideas but just not enough time, .....same old story for everyone I guess!
Cheers, Norman.

Norman, great to see another Aussie who obviously knows a lot more about this stuff than I do, but I have to go one step further than Baz..

So come on, post them up!

Well, I tend to think if you don't have at least 10-15 unfinished projects on the go your just not serious!

That's a fairly "mansize" engine your tackling there Norman. Please put up heaps of pics of your progress as you go mate! I only got into machining very recently, after doing woodwork for years and years, and then getting into CNC a few years back, but I really enjoy using the lathe and mill. I find it quite therapeutic. I've ordered a set of castings from the UK of an Essex Hot Air Engine (also a reasonably large engine) I'm hoping to do with the kids when the reno for the workshop is done. And a few stirlings along the way.

cheers, Ian

Thank you all for the welcome messages, ....it appears that I have just inherited a whole new family in the last few days. I will post pictures and blurb of my projects in the 'A Work In Progress' part of this forum once I have taken some and loaded them onto Photobucket. The first project will be called 'BIG MILL ENGINE' for want of a better title. (It is mentioned 3 replies above this one) However, please be warned that progress may take quite some time as I also earn my living from my workshop and hobbies unfortunately have to take second place to earning a crust! .....much to my annoyance! The big mill engine is nothing spectacular and will be pretty conventionally built apart from one or two little differences not seen on this type of engine. Those differences will become evident as the build progresses so I will just keep you guessing.
Regards to all,
Norman.

Welcome to HMEM Norman from Adelaide. Looking forward to lots of pics.
