Iron production was and is one major block in the foundation of the industrial age. This metal is versatile material used for cook pots to industrial machinery. so I believe it only fitting to list a few of the early iron foundries that are now historic sites.

Good cast iron is far and away my Favorite material to machine. It machines, threads, and works beautifully, is strong, wear and damage resistant, and finishes and paints beautifully. For engine building give me good cast iron over aluminum, brass, gunmetal, etc, any time.
