This is rather similar to the mechanism used in "Pater Noster" elevators.

They used to be more popular, but they tend to kill and maim their users, so they are quite rare nowadays. You can still find a few in central Europe. I rode one that's installed in the Stuttgart Rathaus (town hall), so now I can tick the "Pater Noster" off my bucket list.

Up near Severn Ontario is a boat lift , the Big Chute Railway, on the waterway that lifts a boat up and over a ridge. It has rails like that so a boat says flat while it makes the trip up and over.
