Hello all
I'm in need for a tap.(m 18x1.5)
I know it is doable to make your own tap(s) and it has been described how to do it. I know there are some of you that have done it. So please can someone help me.
Of-course I can go and buy me one but if I can make my own I can go bragging to the guys at job tomorrow Rof}

do you need a tap or can you single point thread the part. 18 mm is a decent sided hole.
If you have the skill and tooling to make a tap threading the hole should be very doable.

The basic procedure to make a tap would be thread a piece of drill rod
taper the end
set up in indexing head mill the flutes
mill a square on the handle end
then harden and temper.
IIRC machinery's handbook will give dimensions for standard taps.

Here's an M8 one I made using exactly the same method as Tin outlines above.
