I live just north of the Pyramid in Memphis TN on Front St. The US Coast Guard Station
in between me and the river, I can now stand on my patio and look at the pilot house
on the buoy tender (Kankakee) they have there. there is a seawall (built around 1938 and never tested)
between me and the river the Coast Guard is on the other side of it and has already been
shut down. I dont think the water will get to me but it is becoming a concern to everyone
the water is finding ways to get around the seawall such as sewers and storm drains,
the river should crestabout tuesday at about 48 feet that is 2 feet higher that it is now.
Water is now at the foot of famous Beale st and starting to reach the
only road into the affluent area called Mud Island home to about 5000 people
got to hope for the best and will be glad when this gets over.
On a better note had a good time at the NAMES convention this year
look forward to next year.

Hope the best for you folks. This is a disaster; a slow, all powerful disaster.....

The Mississippi river will eventually change course and begin running in the Atchafalaya river basin. The Corps of Engineers has done a remarkable job in keeping it running in its current course, but as with all things this large, it will win in the end and New Orleans will be left high and dry. One can only hope that this lies far enough in the future that the US can make plans to prevent the loss of 2/3 of its water borne commerce.

That man can fight against a force of nature this big, and make a respectable showing as well, gives me great pride in our engineering abilities as a species.

QUESTION: say you are paddling down the street and the light turns red do you still have to stop? John

I have a rooftop deck overlooking all this water, the river is
about to crest late monday. the water is actually higher than my condo
just the seawall and railroad between us. I am just north of the auction st
bridge on the west side of front. it is unbelievable the amout of people
that have been on my st this past week, I have had trouble getting out of
my gate for traffic being backed up. We should be past this by mid week
but the amount of mud, debris, and other things left behind is incredible
and the potential for mosquitos because of filled back water area is going
to be unreal.

Hello fellow mid-southerners! It's good to see people from the same neck of the woods posting here.

I live a bit east of the Mighty Mississippi out in Collierville but the Wolf River sure scared my family and I a couple weeks ago when the monsoon was still around. The county flood prediction map was showing a "Most likely will flood" red line 2 houses down from me. There is a drainage ditch that runs directly to the Wolf less than 100 ft. from me that would have probably backed up had the rain not stopped when it did. Way too close for comfort!

My youngest daughter lives across the river behind the levee in Marion, AR and was afraid the levee might fail so she and my granddaughter moved in with us for a couple weeks until things calmed down.

My heart aches for all the folks whose homes & businesses were ruined by this flood.

ps: Thanks for the pictures...I've been too busy lately to get downtown and look around.
