Hello everybody, my name is Pelayo Vial, I'm from Santiago, Chile, in south America. I'm 24 years old and I'm falling in love with machinery. I also like chess and play the electric guitar.
I've been studiyng how engines work for a while and I'm really interested in Motorcycle engines, like V twins. Then I heard about this marvelous hobby and ended up here. I want to learn and take every step to learn this hobby and I'm really excited about it.
Im finishing my law studies here and by march I'll be working so I want to spend my free time between my son (who'll be born in febreaury) my girlfriend and machines.

I'm starting from scratch, so I want you to tell me what to buy as a "starter kit" and how much will it cost me. I want to start with simple things but in a few years I want to be making engines.
I hope this hasnt been too long for an introduction :)

thank you!

Pelayo Vial

PD: sorry if my english isnt that good, my mother language is spanish, I'm making an effort

Welcome Peloyo You can start by looking for used machines . You will need at least a lathe and mill . They are usealy the cheep part of this . The tooling for them is the expenive part . Glad you are here ,lot of people to help you . Dale

Peloya, your English is fine!...and far better than my Spanish! :big:

Welcome!

Dave

Welcome from me too!
kudos on your son!

tom in MA

by the way, your english is excellent!

thank you all for your warm welcome. Im starting out with the army manuals in the "how I get started" thread.

Im looking forward to buy my first lathe and start practicing already, but I'll make a little research first on the one I should buy. Havent found a mini precision metal lathe distribuitor in my country. Just industrial ones.

And by the way, my name is "Pelayo" not "Peloya" ;) strange name, isnt it? ;D

thank you all friends!

Pelayo

(which is way less strange than "Bob" :big:)

Welcome aboard Pelayo, do not worry about your English its just fine. You will find this to be a friendly & helpful forum :D. Dont be shy and jump right in ;)

Hola Pelayo,

Veo que vives en Chile, Yo vivo Ecuador, por si necesitas algun tipo de ayuda o quieres descargar algo en castellano. In this part of the world, things are a bit different......we can not just look at the internet and order it.....I wish I could, so you need to plan things in a different way. Ordering online all the way to Chile will be expensive and difficult, try to find a freight forwarder in a USA port, normally we use Miami as is closer and get it consolidated with other merchandise inside a container, maritime freight is a lot cheaper than air, and custom taxes for machinery are normally low. Here where I live is difficult to find small lathes and mills, as they are not common on industrial use. I purchased my lathe and mill in USA and did that way.

Saludos,

Mario

Muchas gracias Mario! Sería genial tener manuales en castellano, además es mas fácil para comprar las piezas sabiendo cual es su nombre en español. Que bueno saber que también hay gente de habla hispana en este foro.
About the purchase, I'll do as you say, bringing the goods by sea. I'll have to wait a little to gather the money though, but the long wait will be worth it.
Thanks again to all of you for your hospitality, I'll study meanwhile and if its possible Im going to pay a visit to my university's engineering school so I can learn a thing or two from the machines they have.

Pelayo

Welcome Pelayo - (and Mario!) :) from me in another bit of the world where getting machines and ordering things online can be difficult.

Just do the best you can with what you can get; you won't regret it :)

Saludos, Arnold

welcome to the board

what to buy as a "starter kit

there are many interperatations of a basic machinist kit.
1) calipers dial are easy to read . digital are cheap and easy to read but take batteries.
verniers are something you should learn at some point.

2) 0 - 1 Micrometer that reads in tenths

3) a combination square covers many purposes
a) 12" rule
b) square
c) protractor
d) center finder
3) jenny/hermaphrodite caliper
4) dial/test indicator
5) a file
6) center punch
