We call them varmints around here. I know a farmer who lost a leg when his tractor flipped over after running over a groundhog hole. Every day of the year is groundhog day for him. My dad says they make the best housepets you could ever ask for, when he was young they always had one as a pet, he called them laphogs, they were too poor to afford a dog, Dave

Exactly Dave. Dairy cows break their legs, hay trailers roll etc. A few years back my mom was over run by them. One actually was knawing at the undercoating on her car. The only thing we could think of was that it liked the road salt residue from the winter. It actually wound up chewing through the O2 sensor wires.

I have a huge one living under my storage shed out back. Every time I see him destroying 'Honey's' garden I try to convince her that its time to put our UN-invited guest to good use. ;D

I don't know how they taste. They are considered a nuisance and are just left for the other wildlife to feast on. The carcass only lasts two or three days before it is consumed.

Ya know, I've wondered this for some time. Back, ok WAAAY back when I was young the deal was "If he sees his shadow its 6 more weeks of winter and if he doesn't see it its 6 weeks til spring. A little "folk humor." Now it seems that everyone thinks he's some kind of prognosticator. When did this change occur? Or is it just another case of the population "dumbing down"?

Rules are:
(I know this is TRUE because I live in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania! :)

Groundhog Sees Shadow = 6 more weeks of winter
Groundhog Doesn't See Shadow = Early Spring

Our hometown Punxsutawney Phil DID see his shadow this morning, so 6 more weeks of winter.
If the remaining winter is as mild as it has been so far, I'll have no complaints!

Side Note:
As a young teenager, I used to earn $3 a carcass for shooting those rodents out of farmers
cattle pastures. If a cow stepped in a groundhog hole it could break a leg. The farmers would
offer a bounty on them and we liked to prove our shooting skills to our peers.
If you missed a shot from under 100 yards your buddies would be sure EVERYBODY knew about it!
