I actually had the opportunity to run a treadle lathe once.

I was 18 years old working as an apprentice machinist.
The owner of the company had one in his office.

Nice thing is, you are in total control of the spindle speed.
Bad thing is, you are in total control of the spindle speed!

AND it's a lot of work!

I can still see the grin on his face watching me TRY to operate it.

Back in 1967 when I was in high school I built a treadle wood lathe as a wood shop project that worked very well.It had a heavy flywheel that I made out of concrete that just kept going onece you got it spinning.I have a unimat and a old singer treadle base, I think I will tie them together and see what happens ;D.
