This is my youngest grandson Devin who lives in Colorado. He and his dad came for a visit on short notice so I didn't have anything planned. So we spent some time in the shop, working with no plan and from scraps we came up with a finished finger engine. Devin participated in the design and had some good ideas. I stole a flywheel from another project but all the rest came from scrap or stock bar.

It doesn't have a lot of polish but this engine isn't going to sit on a shelf or a desk. It's going to be played with by an inquisitive 8 year old engineer. He is also taking home a set of hex wrenches that fit all the grub screws. I don't know how long it will last. It's up to him. His dad is a pretty good mechanic so he'll be there for support.

Congratulations Devin!

Jerry, you should be proud. I;m sure his Dad is too.

Proud indeed.

There is nothing more enjoyable than seeing a new idea forming in a young mind. Except maybe getting the feeling that they think Granddad is worth listening to.

Thm: Good catch Jerry, get 'em young and hopefully they come back, even if they drift away chasing girls and flash cars for a while.

ONYA Devin!

Inspiring post Jerry and a nice looking little finger engine too. I suspect you may have many more visits from Devin and his dad :)

Thanks for sharing this,
Bill

Good looking engine Devin!

Us old guys ALWAYS ask, what are you going to make next?

We hope to see future projects.

Good one jerry I need to get a kid section for my display. People want to do the touch and feel thing and the enthusiasm is dampened when you tell them not to touch. I thing he needs to build a tin can turbine.

Thanks for the responses. Kids can be a lot of fun. Devin has gone home to Colorado and his best memory was a day at Sea World and the Dolphin show. His second best memory was a day on the beach at Daytona. His third best memory was my daughter's new puppy. But he went home with a lot of fun memories and a finger engine which he will rediscover again when he has time.

If I ever take another engine to a show, I plan to put a throttle or needle valve on the visitor's side of the exhibit. Maybe some finger engines would be a good idea too.

I have often though of setting up a bicycle pump for kids to pump air into a tank. Why let all that raw energy go to waste.
