Based upon an Irish recipe. Great for the lubrication of fireside bull sessions on frosty evenings, or as a nightcap. Make up ahead and refrigerate (less the whiskey which you add just before serving), and then microwave a cup at a time if you don't want to share!
3 pints boiling water
2/3 cup brown sugar
12oz orange juice
1/3 cup lemon juice
16 cloves
8oz whiskey
cinnamon sticks
Mix water, sugar juices and cloves. stir in whiskey, pour into coffee cups or mugs, add short cinnamon stick to each mug, and (optional) slice of lemon for color.
Just a note: I tried to keep the basic recipe to things most people may already have, and like. You can substitute honey, molasses or even treacle for the brown sugar, Some may like it sweeter (use about 1 cup brown sugar) Simply cut the number of cloves if you find it too spicy or substitute with nutmeg if you hate them. Also, some people may want to add Drambuie, or Bitters or even Absinthe -- As long as you like it, there's no 'wrong' way to make punch!
