Don---Maybe its a language thing. ;D ;D On my lathe, the carriage travels left to right between the headstock and tailstock. The crossfeed sets on the carriage and feeds in and out at 90 degrees to the carriage travel. The compound rest sets on top of the crossfeed and can be adjusted to whatever angle you desire. At any rate, I like your solution. I have a similar 8" travel digital caliper here that has some looseness in the head, but would work fine for that application, and once securely mounted the looseness in the head wouldn't be a problem. The beautifull part about it is that the travel of my cross feed is less than the length of my digital caliper.

Hi Don

I use them on my lathe and mill quite successfully. The only thing you have to watch out for is getting coolant or swarf on them. I have clear plastic covers made from the packing that came with a computer motherboard, but any clear plastic would work.

Best Regards
