I'm thinking of getting some sort of DRO set up for my milling machine, probably will have to buy it 'bit part' due to cost so will start with the Y axis as that's the one I seem to have the most trouble with when trying to centre up things.

The table can traverse 18" in the X axis, 6" in the Y and 12" vertically - am I OK to fit 18", 6" and 12" scales or is it better\normal practice to allow a little extra room and go to the next size up for each.

Cheers

Hi Jim

I have fitted DRO's to both my X1 and X3 mills. It absolutely transforms the machines and is a mod that I recommend. You will wonder how you ever managed without them. Here's a link to how I fitted them to my X1 machine, it will give you an idea of what they look like and how relatively simple it is to fit them.

The same type (but longer) are fitted to my X3. I chose this type purely because the price fitted in with my budget.

The addition of the remote readouts makes life a lot easier as well. All the parts were purchased from Arc eurotrade. Here's a link to their website.

With this type of scale care must be taken to keep them clean. The fitting of plastic shields helps a lot.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
