Diesel Aero Engine

Hello There

Ever since being introduced to metalworking some fifty five years ago I have had a desire to build a diesel engine suitable for a model aircraft.

I have now retired and, as a retirement present, I am the proud owner of a mini lathe and small milling machine.

I have perused various builds on this and other sites and have come to the conclusion (probably erroneously) that I would be better if I start a build using castings.

I wonder if anyone knows of a supplier of such castings, or failing that, what would be the best (easiest) engine to build.

'Normally', folk start off with a few simple projects before embarking on an IC engine, but that's not to say a successful first time effort can't be achieved.

Depending on your memory of machining, you may be better off starting a project using bar stock materials - if you make a mistake with a piece of (say) ally, then it is a lot cheaper to replace than a ruined casting.

The Boll Aero is a popular first diesel for many and is from barstock which generally works out cheaper and if you do have a mishap the part is easily replaced.

If you do want to go down the casting route then Hemmingway havethe Sparey diesel

Diesel fuel or some of its constituents are harder to find these days so a glow engine may be a better choice.

Just a suggestion:
Plenty of model, compression-ignition engines to choose from. Check out the "MLA Diesel Engine"....a design that can be made from bar-stock. Many have made this engine, over the years. Mess up a part, just re-machine it from scrap. No castings, no jigs, no fixtures.
