We are surrounded by big oak trees, some of which are not too healthy. The bugs and the beetles love 'em and so do the woodpeckers. This big read headed guy has been working on this tree for quite a while and today he achieved success beyond his widest dreams.

WOW! Did I do that.

Eeezzzy does it, one chip at a time then Crash. Job accomplished, now move on to the next one.

Cheers :)

Don

that second tree is magnificent old specimen. Is than an old english oak or the proverbial speading chstnut under wich the villiage Smithy stands or once stood?
Tin

I'll bet your woodpecker friend just came in to reap the harvest of grubs left exposed by the
broken out top. He's probably having a feast.

Bad couple of day for trees, here!

Dean

Yes Lew, he is a magnificent bird, but stupid. Earlier this spring, the power company replaced all of the old wooden poles with really big concrete ones. Bigger poles, one concrete for every three wooden poles removed. I thought the silly bird would kill himself before he got it figured out.

And Don,Like the ant and the rubber tree plant, High Hopes made his day.

Around here, Tin, they call these things "Water Oaks." These have been standing here for a long, long time. Not the village smithy, but the regional trading post and coach stop stood on this property 150 years ago.

Dean, I don't think he was in it when it went down but he heard the sound of "Dinner is served"

Don't let Zee see this thread. He has nightmares about such things, no doubt. :big:

Reminds me of the old English Histoical Landmark'oaks here in south jersey apparently planted in colonial times'.
My wife thought I was crazy when she first moved here from New England. Turn Left by the big Oak tree ?? what kind of directions is that?. any more it is turm by the wawa and one has to ask which one.
Tin

Good Morning, Gents ............... During my first months here in South Jersey, I carried a map with me e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e I went. When that failed me, I tried to think what compass direction I needed (using the sun as a reference, except when the sky was cloudy - in which case, I was in bigger trouble), than went that way until I recognized something... anything! ??? Of course, with the bending roads, I could still get disoriented. Fun times! Friends of mine were coming down to visit, when we were still living in a more rural area, with virtually no landmarks. Mostly broken down chicken coops - all over the place. So, we went up to the Garden State Parkway, and took pictures of all the intersections needed for workable directions (complicated by road work going on, naturally!). They thought it was the biggest joke in the world, until they drove down!! ::) Then, they actually complained about the wrong color car at the intersection, or the grass being brown instead of green. :p Fun times, indeed!! :big:
