Ran into an interesting project. A friend of mine has a 1922 Dodge and asked me if I would look at his leaking water pump. He thought some new packing would do the trick. I told him that I did not think there was enough packing on the planet to seal this shaft. It was rather hysterical and made my day to see this. The impeller repair was rather interesting as you can see and I suspect the engine was over heating. The original shaft is about 1-1/2 thousandth under a standard 5/8”. The drive gear appears to be a shrink fit to the cut down shaft size and he just bought and showed me a shinny new shaft at 5/8”. My theory is that perhaps Dodge bought cheap steel, took a skim cut then bored the impeller and drive gear for a clearance fit. On the upside, if I bore to a standard 5/8”, the existing bearings cleanup nicely. I still have to determine the clearance to fit the impeller and drive gear. I’m thinking a quarter thousandth.
