I can't remember if I introduced myself, so here it is.
My names Jordan, I'm a small engine mechanic. I haven't built any model engines but I would like too. I just picked up my first model steam engine at a flea market for 20 bucks. Thinking of blasting it and painting it. Its pretty beat up looking. What go you guys think? It also says fletcher something. Half the letters are peeled off.

welcome to the forum

Google Fleishman steam engines and I think you will find out that is what you have.

the one in the pic is for sale listed as new for $90 so IMHO would not hurt to fix up and paint.
welcome to the world of steam.

Hi Jordan and welcome to the forum

I agree with Tin Falcon it looks like a Fleishman German Engine and they are quite collectable, But it's the usual box and condition thing, If it had it's box and better still unused it would be worth hundreds of dollars maybe even thousands for very old mint ones.

I don't really see the point myself of this mint and boxed thing Steam Engines are meant to be steamed and enjoyed. so with this one a little paint and polish would be good although the collectors would have a fit.

These little Steam Toys are actually quite easy to "fix up" even with simple hand tools I've done quite a few of them over the years.

I notice that some of the boiler fittings are missing (filler plug and safety valve) as is the chimney but these won't be too difficult to make

I think it's a great little engine and at 20 Bucks you got a real bargain.

Cool thanks for helping me find out what it was.
I'm not really after the value of it anyway, but I am going to try and match the original colour. And possibly paint a label back on to it. I want to use it, but I don't want it to rust any more than it has already. So I don't think its a big deal.

Anyways, as skyline pointed out its missing a cap of some kind, and the chimney. Do you guys know where I would get something that may work as a cap? I wonder If a fill cap from a wilesco or mamod would work?

Thanks for your helps gents.

Welcome! The only thing I would be concerned about is the integrity of the boiler. The other parts you can fix up or replace.

Boiler seems alright. A little oxydized from having water left in it I assume but seems fine. The piston and crank move nice and smooth too. I just need to figure out something for a fill cap. Any ideas?

fist find out what thread size you need then see if you can find a thumb screw the correct size.

Hi Jordan

Bearing in mind it's German the filler cap could well be a metric thread, as the German engines Fleischman, Bing, and the like often are.

Germany has been using metric threads for many years, before it became a European standard.

Failing this you could unsolder the ferrule (the tapped bush it fits in) and fit a Mamod one, I think the Mamod Engines were actually loosely based on the Fleischman design, Though not a direct copy they are certainly similar take a look at an early Mamod SE2a the Mamod equivalent of this one and you'll see what I mean.

Ok thanks guy. I know its an m5 i just don't have a thread pitch gauge to check it but ill get one when i get the chance. If i can't get the right size ( considering I'm in Canada) ill try skylines idea.

Thanks a lot.
Cheers, Jordan.
