Arrand Spindle

Mint condition. In original box with other accessories.
Used on Myford lathe.

Difficult to put a price on as there are none for sale, but I have based this on two recent sales on eBay, going for £250 and euro 270.

Please advise what size is the taper in the spindle and does it have provision for a draw bar ?

I have two Potts spindles. One is a drilling one whilst the other is a grinding one. The latter is in Ian Bradley's book, the Grinding Machine whilst the other is in Leonard Sparey's the Amateurs Lathe. They were once common i.e. before the advent of milling machines in the home workshop.

I've got some more Arrand stuff. It's obviously dated and occasionally used by old workers like me.

The best 'recent' price on Gumtree was quoted as £125. Whether it was sold at that price or whatever, I don't know.

What I do know is that a gave a friend a Potts because he helped me to lift an Axminster C4 lathe from a van into my indoor workshop.

In the past few days, I was given a brand new similar item to the Arrand complete with a brand-new 3" Chinese chuck for £20

It all should bring things into reality.

The diameter of the largest part of the taper.
Maybe there is a mark such as MT1 ?
Is there a hole all the way through the spindle ?

yes there is a hole through the spindle.

It‘s morse taper 1. It clearly says Jacob‘s chuck arbor pt A101. Morse taper 1.‘

.... I can confirm the Spindle uses Morse1 taper tooling ... it is a brilliant, bullet proof piece of tooling using angular contact ball bearings ... I know because I have had one since 1992 ... it is bored to suit 6mm drawbar for the taper tools. It looks like the riser block has been machined to allow the Spindle to be at the lathe centre height when placed on the lathe cross slide (possibly to suit a Myford S7 Lathe ??).

But is the company that made Arrand tooling( I have the boring head)still in existence?

i spent a lot of time searching but got nowhere.

However, I DID get a price for a second hand one which equated to what I paid for a Potts vertic stand with a Myford 'nose etc and a 9 hole dividing head for it.

So might I thank you for your efforts in trying to help?

I think you will find that Arrand Engineering stopped trading about two years ago when the owner retired.

I'd sort of come to that conclusion but had sufficient 'savvy' ( Savoir faire) to buy an Arrand boring head- which is a nice bit of kit but in a more logical No 2 MT.
So with both arguably better Potts milling and grinding spindles added a vertical No2 MT vertical milling spindle with a 9 hole which whilst not made by G P Potts was clearly built tp an equally high standard from what are clearly Potts castings!
Of course nothing is perfect ( save Allah) and the Metric 25mm diameter has superseded the 1" diameter tooling on things like Myford and Quorns and dividing heads and rotary tables etc etc.
So I'm working Imperial on my Myford Super7B PXF and Metric on my Sieg C4 with a standard metric milling attachment

I agree but like rocking horse manure and hens' teeth, the supply of Arrand and. Potts stuff is limited.
The wise don't argue about the price- one goes with a limitless wallet/pocket book for a purchase.
It is NOT good manners to openly discuss such things as Price.
It's a bit like an uncouth American asking what horse power a classic Rolls Royce was. In its inimitable way R-R replied 'Adequate'
