Some times I question my sanity with this hobby. But I guess there are stranger ways to spend hobby time and money. I was browsing flea bay last week and came across one of these on a buy it now deal

It is a Machinex 5

Did not spend a lot but it needs work . It is a two headed monster it has the regular head stock plus the second one with the mill drill mount. It already had two of the handles busted off and the third went in shipping. The mill drill down feed handle is missing as well. There are a couple of dings on it and a little patina on the ways . I think this was bought in the 70s and never used just a bit of storage wear. This one appears to be imperial but I have seen metric ones as well.
The chuck appears to be an independent 3 jaw type that has aluminum reversible soft jaws easily replicated and machinable.
I will have to acquire some tooling to get it going. Will try to get some real picks up when I get it together.

Interesting! I saw that thing on FeeBay last week too, during my current search for a lathe. Neat find.

Tin, is that the one from the seller in Canada? If yes I was watching that.

Great Find!!!

I just bought a small wood lathe made in 1932. I'll be fixing it up to ;D I'll be sure to post pictures when it gets here.

Later...

Tin... Ok, I saw that listing... $125 + Ship isn't bad. I see the two in NY...

What's one weigh? I've got a 1/4 HP motor just looking for a mission...

Thanks!

That's pretty neat, Tin. It appears to have attributes of both Taig and Sherline machines, but from what lathes uk says, was made in the 70's. Taig and Sherline also came out in that time frame. Makes me wonder just who was peeking at whom's homework back then.

Did I read that spec right, where it said it has a 1"-16 spindle? Big spindle for a little lathe. Sounds like you're going to be cutting threads to make accessories.

I remember quite some time back, maybe in the 60's, when Edelstaal had an attachment to Unimat. They used to have short ads disguised as an article, usually a couple of pages long telling all the things you could make with the Uni. Maybe they were the importer back then, before the started having these machines made in the U.S.A.

Have fun with it. Pics would be nice, when you get it!

TW: ok new york IIRC mine was 65# per fedex. The one without the motor and second head should be around 30-40 or so. The bed is cast iron or steel and the head stock and tail stock a saddle are aluminum. I think the guy from NY gives you a tool post as well. again aluminum. You will need to machine a chuck adapter but I should be able to help if you need.
There are two part numbers listed on e bay I do not know the difference one may be a long bed 24" instead of 20" or it may be a metric imperial thing. I bought one of these before for a friend IIRC same E-bay seller as the current listings . Also I do not think the vertical column comes with these . But still not a bad deal for a NOS made in USA lathe.

Yup been there done it sweated in the T-Shirt.

Dean, Edelstaal was the US distributor for the Unimat. I see their ads in the back issues of Popular Mechanics from the 1960's

Tin, thanks. I should probably not buy one right now. I'm moving in a few weeks and that's one less thing for me to deal with. If they have any left once moved... Maybe...

I read both posts from that seller something is broken on the one that's priced $10 less. I forgot what was broken.

Hey Tin, I was watching one of those Machinex lathes. Not sure if it's the one you got or not. I keep thinking I need... OK, want a smaller lathe to compliment my 11" Logan. What I really want is a Sherline, but darn, they are expensive! Anyway, good find. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it!

Hi Tin,

I was really lucky on Wednesday. A Edelstaal Machinex5 was advertised on Craigslist & I was the first to respond to the ad. The Seller had bought it in the late 1970's or early 1980's to do work on his Lionel trains. He bought it with all the accessories (except the rotary table) & never even took it out of the box. Price was only $150.00. I couldn't believe it. It came with all the paperwork & was only missing the wrenches. I'm will probably keep it although I do have a Sherline lathe & mill with almost all the accessories.
