has crippled my computer and pretty much destroyed everything I had collected in the last three or four weeks. Pictures and pdf's mostly. I will not be able to log in very often(since I'm checking the forums from work). I wanted everyone to know that I'm still alive and kicking, and will have a large amount of 'catch-up' to do when I get another computer. That means a long, picture filled post. Luckily, the IRS rebate is coming in a week or so. Not sure how I'll fare with the likes of Vista or Win7. :big:

For those who give a hoot,

I bet that was a shock,I would dread that, most of my stuff is on an external disk so may be safe. You will find Vista great,I don't know about 7

I just upgraded my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7. I love it. Performance is much better and Windows 7 is much easier to navigate around in.

I just bought THIS PC to better handle the wife's photo programs. It is Windows 7.
I like it much better than Vista, but I only get to use it when it's not being used for
actual work, so I'm still using the Vista machine most of the time. :-\
For the programs I use, Windows 7 has fewer compatibility issues than Vista.

I just gave away my last working XP PC so I'm stuck with Vista or 7 until I take the
time to get a couple of the old ones down from the attic to hopefully make a good
one that runs out of two or three dead ones.

If you have an old machine that still runs, think about putting in a couple big HD's and building it up into a Windows Home Server. Great for automatic redundant daily backups for a house full of PCs (Linux and Mac are SOL though)

Rick, Dude....you're not putting any money in my pocket by buying AMD processors. I hope HMEM is based on a server farm someplace which is using Intel Xeon CPU's so it doesn't overheat and crash on you, and us. :hDe:

Sorry Trout, but penny per penny AMD's 1.6GHz crawls all over an Intel 2.0GHz processor.
I'm not putting Intel down, just saying...

As for the server, I think they must be running IBM 286's.
OK, that was out of line. I'm sure they are doing there level best to not allow
our server to crash at least once a day.

I better quit at that. LOL

Kermit, I sure hope you don't get stuck with a Vista machine. Don't know anything about 7, but I think Vista is awful. I'd rather have Windows 98 than this Vista thing.

Hope you find one you like and get going soon!

Hi all! Sailing along with with an Athlon X2 and Ubuntu Linux. ;D

Good luck in your quest Kermit.

Dean, I agree with you on Vista. I used it on my laptop for a couple of years. Didn't like it at all. My performance kept getting worse and worse. I had almost decided to reload XP, then thought I'd try Windows 7. Much, much better. Much cleaner interface and much better performance. Of course, I did a clean install, so that probably helped some too.

Hi Guys,

I'm still bopping along with XP - no complaints but then again I don't know much about operating systems. My wife's laptop has Vista and it's a pain in the proverbial to try and sort out her Oops. My notepad also has XP.

It seems to me as if Microsoft was trying to cater to vested interests in the film and and music industries with Vista and failed everybody, especially Mr. Joe Average like myself.

I feel if you want a computer to do what you want, the only solution is to buy the bits and assemble it yourself, then use the operating system you choose. That way you avoid all the brand hidden partitions, sub operating systems and controls incorporated in a brand setup machine.

Best Regards
Bob

Thanks Chuck. I need to try something else. I get regular blue screens and "program has stopped working" things, besides Windows' almost daily updates, (patches for problems). Very annoying.

My first laptop came with Vista. Shortly after I got it, it crashed so bad that HP sent me a new one. I told them I was very unhappy with their product, so they said they would make it up to me and sent me the top of the line unit. The first one I bought had been their cheapest one, at $500. They sent me a $1400 unit. They didn't charge me anything for all the "upgraded" stuff, but it's still no good.

My old desk top with XP has worked flawlessly for years.

what u need is and second computer in ur shop for storing all this great info taht way u dont get virus just be sure to scan everything before u put it in that machine.
i have win2k in the shop pretty good system but the other four are vista and win 7 i like them ok but its sure hard to beet that win2k its a real work horse. have fun

Well, I'm back on line and making trouble in the digital realms... ;D

Stuck with Windows 7 as I don't feel like learning Linux right now. The best change has got to be the 23 inch HD monitor. It's a Samsung and cost just a little under $400. Just a little less than the computer. The package came with a printer, and I haven't even opened the box yet. I don't print much at home.

Also, the motherboards chipset DOES support XP compatibility mode. I had to ask that question several times before the salesman understood what I was telling him. Basic observation - intel chipsets of the 6000, and 8000 series, plus 7600 support XP mode. AMD chip sets of the 68--, and 88-- series also support it. NONE of the others support it. Strangely enough, several computers were preloaded with Win7 Pro (the one with XP mode), but did not have chipsets to support that feature...
