Investigate the local hobby stores (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Etc.) The wife and I stumbled across our G-daughters house on sale. They are still on sale. Lots fewer of them, but they are still selling the kits that go for $199 on the web, for $49.95. Looking at the websites which cater to the hobby, you will have a hard time getting that good of a deal.

Look for local stores. They will be more likely to have stuff on sale.

Turned into a HUGE project - but she was worth every bit of it.

My wife was with me on a Hobby Store visit one day, and she asked if they
sold dollhouse kits. Two salesman were immediately on their feet to lead her to
that section of the store. Naturally, they had fully assembled kits on display.
Working light switches operated ceiling light, lamps and little crystal chandeliers.

It was very cute, but I already HAVE a mortgage! :big:

Shop around, there are deals to be found on them.

I had look at, and a read over, the plans and noticed they suggest putting the good side of your plywood down on the table saw. Unless you are using a zero clearance blade opening(higher end, professional practice) you will chip out the edges of the good surface. They aren't supported if they are facing down and the saw is exiting that face, hence the tear out on the edges. Turn the boards so the good side is facing up and you will not get ragged edges on that side, and apply some wide masking tape along the bottom side. The tape will help support the edges and keep the tear out to a minimum.

Building a dollhouse from scratch is not for the faint of heart, my precut kit was nowhere near as easy as I thought it would be. For a grandchild however, all limits are dismissed. ;D The best of luck to you with this project.

My dad made a dollhouse for my brother's kids a while back. It was pretty basic, but it was a copy of their real house. They loved it.

In regards to the orientation of the plywood when cutting: If you are using a table saw then Kermit is correct; but if you are making the cuts with a saber saw or with a circular saw, common brand name Skill Saw, then the Woodcrafter instructions are correct. It all depends on what tools you have available to work with.

yes i will be using a old craftsman 10" tablesaw with a zero clearance insert and a 80 t blade, i like the Norm method take a skim cut and flip over for the fullcut pass. i also dont like the a/c plywood they have at my local supply(importstuff) cabinet grade is much better.
Thanks for all the input everybody

You may want to talk to your granddaughter and find out what she wants. If your house or her house is simple in design that could be the way to go. I would not make it fancy with lots of frills unless that is what she realty wants. Sometimes part of Model making is finding out what the customer really wants and needs.

My dad did the same thing for my niece. It was a 150 year old house, with lots of "gingerbread," so it was quite a project. The fact that it was a model of her own house made it really special to her. When she got married, I took the doll house and added a few strategically placed chimneys to support a glass top, and now she uses it as a coffee table, and it is still special to her.
