Hey
I am looking for some 2:1 spur gears for my 4 stroke build. i am in australia and if they had a 10mm bore that would be great. i have been googling gears all afternoon and my head hurts. I am thinking about cutting my own and as much fun as that sounds, i would like to see my options. So, does anyone have any ideas in Australia
Mick

There's a company called Smallparts in Qld that do gears in the sizes we use, but they seem expensive. Here's a link. I used the info at this link to make a hob (for free) and I've only ever made my own timing gears since.

Cutting your spur gears is not difficult. By now at least 8 HMEM Forum members cut their Spur Gears and even mitre gears. It is a learning curve. All did have one 1/2 tooth in the gears we cut.But we eventually cut good gears and timing gears for Webster and Rupnow H&M Engines.
Cutting mitre gears was tough but we made it. Involute gear cutter sets from China are quite
cheap and good.

I have cut my tool. Its 3mm between the valleys. Is that module 3?

I Got It!!!!
I finally understand!

I should have paid more attention in math. The circle/straight line/Pi thing just clicked. If i am making a 1 module gear, the spacing should be 1 x Pi.
If i adjust my PCD for my .954 module, my gears will work with each other, but not with anyone elses. Thanks. i am not that quick but i love the part of making things thats figuring out puzzles. And the learning bit. i am 50 and i learn more and more things everyday

so i cut some teeth. they worked out ok but my work holding wasnt quite the thing and altho the tooth came out even, i decided to make another tool with proper mod 1 spacing and try again. Pity my rubber lathe wont comply. I will need to work on the compound so i can lock it to stop the tool digging in. its a SEIG sc3, I think. Chinese brushless lathe. At present i grasp the tool post and pull it back as i cut :)

The bad bits are on the other side. I would also cut some more relief on the cutter next time so it doesnt kick out so much. Thats why I (nearly said bad word) messed up this one. Its a fasinating process, the way you cut a curve with straight cutters.
Addicted..

Bullpeters, you are to be complimented on your determination, however I feel that the finished gear doesn't quite look right. I have drawn up the gear and the cutter profile that you need to cut it with. The depth of the groove in the cutter is the theoretical depth, deeper, with a narrower point tool is OK, so long as the size at the top of the teeth that do the cutting is correct, I forgot to dimension the angle of the profile, it is 20 degrees per side, 40 degrees included.
The cutter that I have drawn is actually a rack, a couple of inputs on my CAD and it will draw it automatically, I have noticed that the depth of the tooth on the drawing shows 2.250mm, whereas in theory it is 2.157mm. The CAD may allow for a slight clearance at the root of the rack.

Thanks Mate
I will have another go today.
I have been making this IC engine since january with no previous experience. i made three heads to get one right, 4 cylinders etc. I am definitely getting better.
if its finished by xmas i will be happy.
Just need to make the gears, the cam, the pushrod etc

If you have any other questions, just ask. A good way to make sure that you get the correct size on your hob is to measure across 2 drills placed in the "V". If you want to know what size drills to use and the correct size when measuring over them, just let me know and I will work it out for you on the CAD.

No worries .Mate.You are making good learning progress.

After three bad spur gears, the fourth was acceptable.

The cutter selected must match the tooth range to avoid having strange tooth
profile. Happened to me.

Your diligence qualifies to cut cams too. My first ten cams went to the scrap
bin.

Thanks Gus. I love asia and I love fishing. I could have bought the parts for a tenth of the cost of making them but its very satisfying. I sell macadamias, my best customers are from Singapore!!!

Trying to post pictures of my attempt. Internet not cooperating
