    End of an (electrical) era

I got my spark generator wired up correctly thanks to Jasonb. I had a good spark but could not get the engine to run. It ran previously with the electronic unit with a hall sensor I had a rather wide gap on the spark plug and looked great outside of the engine but would not run. I finally...

Thanks. I thought that I had tried all combinations but this seems to work.

    End of an (electrical) era

I received one of these a while back and finally got around to trying it. There is no doubt that it puts out a powerful spark and if you get in the way it really grabs you attention. My problem seems to be that it is too good. The spark will jump a good 1/2". When I wire everything up I have...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I usually check for leaks by screwing an adaptor with spark plug threads on one end and air fitting on the other end. I then put pressure in the cylinder with the air compressor and put soap around the potential leak areas. That obviously does nothing for things like valve timing.

I have made them from some brass tube and just parted them off in the lathe. I made several because I know that I will drop some.

    Achtung!!

Saw this at the Indiana show last week.

    Shows keep getting smaller!

The big problem as I see it is that we have the old frogs like me who think that is fun to stand in front of a lathe or mill and turn dials and try to figure out how to do the next operation. Then we have the younger generation who look at this and go to the computer and program the machine to...

    South Bend lathe taper attachment

I am confused. Not exactly unknow territory. I have a 13" south bend lathe and I am thinking about making a taper attachment for it. There is a standard feed screw and a telescoping feed screw. Mine has the standard screw. The SB instructions say remove bolt A which disconnects the feed screw...

    2024 Indiana model engine show

I was disappointed that the cars and trucks were not accessible. There was yellow tape keeping you out of the car area and the lower floor was blocked off. I was expecting more engines and access to the cars and trucks. Lots more empty tables than occupied tables.

    Powder painting a flywheel

Brian: Is it possible to have someone in US buy stuff for you and then mail it to you? Ideally if you could find someone who makes regular runs from US to Canada like a truck driver you could purchase it, have it delivered to them and then ship it to you or bring it the next time they come to...

    End of an (electrical) era

I bought these a while back. I have not used one yet but they seem to be OK and the price is good. Delivery from China takes a while. http://www.microcosm-engine.com/10x-spark-plug-protection-cap-accessories-p-330.html

I have been using TPU. Somewhat flexible but still pretty rigid. The ones that I have made do work.

I have been somewhat successful with 3D printing them. The problem is that the 3D filament is not as flexible as the silicone so different 1/4-32 plugs are different enough that you need different configurations. Steve Huck who sells 1/4-32 plugs has used a modified air fitting.

    Ball bearing center

The taper is .602/ft. #4 1/2 is .624 /ft and #5 is .631/ft so it is just something that South Bend used. I have no idea why they chose that taper instead of using something standard.

    Ball bearing center

The MT3 and the main body are one piece and the retainer/seal at the end does not have any obvious way to remove it. I assume that it is pressed in place. At this point I have discovered another problem on the headstock end. The adaptor to hold the MT3 center is not accurate. I suspect that the...
