That is because the non genuine use the cheap LR44 (Alkaline) batteries whereas the genuine will only work with the more expensive SR44(Silver Oxide) batteries

Hi Marty, not having a go at you, I was just adding to your post to help other tell the difference between a genuine & a non genuine with your pics, as I have also been through this with a purchase. I use many cheap calipers for for quick measurements & pull out my Mitutoyo for critical...

    Let's talk drilling...

But if you use a 60deg centre drill & your pilot hole is off because the pilot drill can't go in deep enough to align the pilot drills point with the centre of the divot then everything after that including the reaming will be off. If you use the correct size & point angle spotting drill your...

    Let's talk drilling...

Hi Hennie, a spotting drill is different to a centre drill. A centre drills cutting angle is ground to the correct angle to support a tailstock centre. A spotting drills cutting angle is ground to the correct angle to align a drill bit & will give you greater accuracy. I personally don't...

Stevenson's ER25 collet blocks and Metric blocks

Hi Jason, one of the other advantages of the 12 sided Joe block is that the nut does not protrude past the block & therefore can be held on a Magnetic chuck or using strap clamps etc straight on the mill table. If you have a height problem you could again mount it straight on the mill table as...

    Any suggested gear cutting sets?

Don't say that too loud in the US lol somebody might hear you. 😎 Here in Australia we tend to bounce between the two a little, due to a lot of old English & American machinery still in use here, but we are mostly metric especially new machinery

Stevenson's ER25 collet blocks and Metric blocks

Hi Brian, yes small flats but they still offer plenty of support though I wonder if Felix at MagPro would consider taking on UK or US distributors to help get the shipping cost to the end users down, win win on both sides. It would be much the same to ship bulk to UK or US as to ship to...

Stevenson's ER25 collet blocks and Metric blocks

Hi Brian, they where developed here in Australia by Joe Hovel & his mate Peter with the help of Felix Wu (MagPro) for the manufacturing & distribution in mid 2017. I believe MagPro bought the patent or something like that or have distributions rights. You can read about it in Metal Works Forums...

Stevenson's ER25 collet blocks and Metric blocks

Hi Brian, also called a collet block, they usually use a 5C type collet, but you can also get the ER32 version https://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Collets/ER-Collet-Fixtures/ER32-Collet-Blocks I actually use a 12 sided ER32 version, this does both square & hex etc, all in the one block...

Hi Stephen, Sounds like it is going to be a great shop whether it is in the basement or separate. One thing I know is a as you get older the toilet gets further away lol. Where ever you build the shop try to budget a toilet close by. You both will appreciate not having make a desperate run...

    Lathes

Hi Stephan, I am also fairly new also, but is is amazing what some people do with their mini lathes. One thing that I would do if I was purchasing a new lathe ( mine is a 1985 Taiwanese copy of an Emco Compact 8) is find one that has the carriage handle to the right of the cross slide &...

Beginner here, is this a good way to proceed

I agree, buy a 7x or similar & start upgrading it by making your own upgrades for your lathe & mill (to a lesser extent) and you will learn a lot as well as improve your mini lathe. This will lead to making better products for your Uni course. Remember you never stop learning in this field, so...
