    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

Stink bugs love to, and are capable of, squeezing thru very small cracks. And grouping into an infestation, yuck! The contactor is SPST-NO so the stink bug must have been asleep between the 2 terminals while they were open and maybe it had enough resistance in its body to prevent initial...

    Compressed air and air drying

Darn, we've got some clever and resourceful people around here. But @The Ignoble Troll , I can't quite picture where the piston and vanes fit into the system and whether it removes water while filling the tank or using air from the tank. It seems like both of the DIY designs shown in this thread...

Single Cylinder Opposed 2 Piston Engine

Ray, I was wondering about the balancing, too. Some large holes machined in the flywheels diametrically opposite to the weights would improve the balance while also reducing the rotating mass. It could be an option if a reasonable balance is difficult to achieve. Lloyd P.S. BTW, excellent work...

    Removal of bearings from shaft

Ha ha, no big deal Joe. We are all grownups here (in years anyway) and are capable of making our own bad choices. The broken shaft was a "perfect storm" kind of situation. The drill press was big and cheap and of questionable national origin. I was working late in the shop back before I...

    End of an (electrical) era

I like this kind of MacGyver or mad scientist approach when giving something brand new a try. You're not sure it is going to work so you fiddle around until you get that moment where it barely kinda works and you realize you are on to something. Then you can clean up the design or, if it didn't...

    Removal of bearings from shaft

I tried the bfh method that @ajoeiam mentioned earlier to get the bearing nut off an old drill press. Big socket, 24" breaker bar. No go. 24" cheater pipe. Ahhh. There you go. Hmmm. Left hand thread. Sigh. Luckily, the nut was saved from stripping when the hollow shaft broke first.

A New Method (?) to Dynamically Change Cam Timing when Engine is Running

I really like this idea, but maybe with a timing belt instead of a chain. Actually, I like it better than my idea of shifting a gear off-axis. Pushing an idler roller against a belt ought to be easier, I think. Lloyd

A New Method (?) to Dynamically Change Cam Timing when Engine is Running

Sweet! So many approaches to the same problem.

Solid state is fairly impervious to stink bugs, too. I would have expected more from 200 amps at 50vdc.

    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

Terry, Thanks so much for doing and sharing that testing. I have also found that high current semi conductors of questionable origin have a high infant mortality rate and that heatsinks don't help much with high inrush current. Sticking with name brands from a supplier like Mouser or Digikey is...

All I can do is shake my head, but I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Soooo nice.

Seeking Advice on Liquid Silicone Rubber Injection Molding

@scottmartin Are you still here? What compound, from whom, are you using? The data sheet (not the MSDS) should recommend at least a few different curing schedules, depending on volume, cross section, through-put required, etc.

Anyone installed a Soft-Start kit for a compressor?

I know that the starting current (inrush?) for a compressor (air, heat pump, AC, etc) can be several times greater than the run amps and even the locked rotor amps. I am trying to size a new portable backup generator but am having a hard time justifying one large enough to start any compressors...

Single Cylinder Opposed 2 Piston Engine

...............I wrote this yesterday and forgot to post it, so it might seem out of sequence.............. OK, I am a little relieved. The magic bullet is a secondary finishing operation, not some super stiff solid carbide rod with an integral boring and reamer, or some other secret mo-jo.

What have you been doing today?

I'll be interested to hear how that Wolf 10/14 does. I have been using the Wolf 24 and sometimes the teeth seem to load up (even when using some oil) and progress slows down. I use it for both steel and aluminum. That 10/14 ought to be pretty aggressive. And my last blade broke the other day. I...

    Off-Grider Generator Kit

I agree, there are plenty of precise terms in electronics. The use of data sheets and standard dimension, etc, are very nice and save time and trouble. But then the jargon starts being thrown around , like buck converter for example.?? The novice (me) always has to be looking up these...

A New Method (?) to Dynamically Change Cam Timing when Engine is Running

I was doing some calcs for the gear train for the 2 stroke diesel I am building and was thinking about the possibility of adjusting the cam timing when the engine was running. Say, for changing the injection advance and ****** curve. Here is a method that is new to me, but might be old news to...

Single Cylinder Opposed 2 Piston Engine

Ray, Is that line boring bar just a steel rod with a cross-hole for a hand-ground bit? And a center in the tailstock to stabilize the long end of the bar? how do you keep the vibration out of it? Thanks very much, Lloyd.

    Off-Grider Generator Kit

I think some kids are naturally dangerously creative (only partially joking) and will seek the sources out. But encouragement from a mentor is important. I taught industrial arts (shop) in a middle school for 2 years but I didn't have the temperament for it. In each class, I would say that maybe...

    Off-Grider Generator Kit

I agree about the modern ovens shamelessly staying with a couple of mechanical relays and bottom of the barrel basic temp control. They already have a processor on board, and I think all they'd need to do is replace the mechanical relays with 3 nice solid state relays. The switching rate of the...
