    Lathe Files

Some good info here. The photo from Jasonb shows swafs much the same as my shear tool. I've just got to find out where I can get a long angle cut file in Australia.

    Lathe Files

Are the large angle single fine cut files worth it, or will a normal single smooth cut be just a good ?. I've noticed a large different in cost.

    Sieg Sx 2.3 Mill

Hi all I need some help with the above mill. Doing a bit of maintenance like adjusting gibs and general tidy up. Having issue with the column dovetail gib. Does this gib come out from the top and if I keep adjusting it down should the head become tight or locked up. If so mine doesn't I can push...

    Valve Timing 4 Stroke

This could be a long post but bear with me. I purchased a Chinese 4 stroke from Stirlingkit last year. Very happy with it until a grubscrew failed on the small gear on the crankshaft which jammed up on the larger gear on the cam side shaft, both gears suffered some damage. After a lot of shaky...

    Valve Seats

Not the smartest kid on the block but have managed to build a couple of engines that actually run. I always have trouble with valves & seats and lapping them in. I just had an issue with a (bought) Chianese blue hit & miss which lost comp. through the inlet valve. When I dismantled it the valve...

Thanks HCNZ, I have copied your table & will check it out. The thread dial has 24 teeth and as per previous post from djc I followed his suggestions. It's so much easer to drop the halfnut randomly & cut several met. threads.(thanks djc) Other threads I will leave the halfnut engaged & reverse...

    Thread Dial

Done a couple of more threads this morning, all ok. The drive shaft I mentioned is where the coupling for the leadscrew which has a sleeve & two roll pins (maybe I should change one to brass). Unable to get to the halfnut looks like a major job. Yes I managed to confirm the lead screw with a...

    Thread Dial

An update to my issues. I ended up disconnecting the lead screw and found that there was a fair amount of float in the main drive shaft. Removed the forward reverse gear lever (BIG MISTAKE) and the yoke that slides the gear into place fell off. Had to dismantle a bit more to get it back. Anyway...

    Thread Dial

My understanding is if you use a normal metric thread gauge and align the tips to the center of leadscrew thread will give a correct pitch. I used a 3 pitch tab and it matched perfectly to the center of each leadscrew thread. Is this incorrect ?.

Peter what it is if I engage the halfnut (lathe off) and attempt to move the carriage back & forth with the handwheel The halfnut clamps to the leadscrew and holds firmly but the leadscrew has about 1/8" end float ?
