    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Brian, I do still have some of those 1/4-32 boots. Also, Dan has had the large CM-6 clips made and I think he is also working on the 1/4-32 clips. I still have the die set from Bruce Satra for the small 10-40 plugs which will be available to Dan. We were concentrating on the CDI but I will make...

    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

Terry and Don, you are both correct. Heat is the enemy in the DC-DC converter but not a problem in the HV section. As you increase the input voltage you also increase the high voltage to the Capacitor, SCR, and Coil. The most vulnerable component here is the SCR. I have toasted many of them in...

    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

Terry, you are correct on the slightly smaller value capacitor so it can charge faster. The Magnum was not designed to run strictly on 6 volts. Depending on the RPM's you need, it will operate very well on any voltage from 4.5 to 6. The reason I stressed 6 volts as an upper limit is we also...

    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

I want to give everyone a heads up that Dan Williams is now building my CDI to my original specs and quality. I have been working with Dan since the CF Expo and he is now up to speed to provide the CDI's. I will continue working with him to supply parts for the Snow Engine and Lee's radial...

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

I miss you guys too Mr. John V. Doug, you are nearly correct but the braided shielding IS THE GROUND for the spark plug/CDI. I did this on an older unit but have not had time to do it on a newer Rcexl but am 99% sure we are good to go. You can cut both the braided shield and the spark plug wire...

Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

Dave, I've not had a spark coil fail yet (knock on wood) but it is a definite possibility, they are well epoxy encapsulated. From past experience it seams the hall sensor gets the worst end of the deal. Brian, the .250" gap won't hurt and if you have that experience again you could fill it in. I...

Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

dsage is spot on. I would also put a jumper wire across the resistor A-C. I'm sure the spark is from A-B on the coil. I would also take the spark plug out of the equation and put the ground wire end to end with the spark plug wire with about 3/16" of gap and see if it is still arching at the...

Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

That's correct Brian, it is a lead for an LED to show that the system is on. If you are getting a noise inside the box it is most likely the spark coil. If you carefully pry at the 3 openings you can pop the bottom off the CDI box. You will have to slide a knife down to the 4th pin or it will...

Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

You can get away with a steel gear, just use a longer magnet and let it stick out past the face about 1/8". I see the parts made it back to Canada so you should see them soon.

    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

Don, not sure why you are using a ballast resistor? I agree with dsage on the 6 volts. At 6 volts any resistance beyond the primary winding will effect the output of the coil. I would also be curious what your results would look like if the spark plugs were under 30 to 50 psi. of pressure. I...

Help with ignition for inline Ford 6 Cylinder model engine

I doubt there is anything wrong with the unit you have Shelby but I do have replacement units for the one you have. Send me an email, right now I'm behind and trying to get caught up. I'll can also check out and repair the system you have now it you want to send it to me. [email protected]

Help with ignition for inline Ford 6 Cylinder model engine

Steve and George are most likely correct with the hall being fried. That is one of my old original CDI's. 6 volts MAX and they ran the most efficient on 5 volts. In the photo of the CDI it looks like the Spark Coil ground has come loose. Attached is what it should look like. The loop on the...

    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

I'll look to see if I have any transformers already wound from the Bare Bonz CDI. What I was offering Dave was the coil form and E-cores. I should have been more specific I guess but it looks like you won't need them right away so maybe I'll be able to find some parts or even possibly wind a...

    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

That is pretty much the circuit I used for the Bare Bonz CDI so I know it works well for our small engines. Dave, if you want to play with that circuit, I have the parts for the step up transformer that I can send you. The step up transformer is the key to these CDI units.

    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

This should be very close to the last CH and early Rcexl CDI. Hope it will give some clues as to what makes a CDI tick. My system is a little more elaborate but the basic concept is here.

    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

Don, in post #154 is that CDI one of the open boards with the spark coil on the end of the CDI? If it is I may have a schematic of a circuit very similar to it and or the CH units. Just so you know, Bill Carpenter from CH worked with Rcexl to develop that circuit until Rcexl took over and parted...

    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

Hi Don and Dave Sage, I'd like to thank both of you for all the good advise and help you have given me over the years and also to the engine community for all of their support over the years. The main reason I'm retiring is the need to get started machining engine castings, and also my wife is...

    Ageless 9 and 18 Radial

Looking very good. I do have some concern with the wiring. It all looks very good and neat and I don't feel the metal hoops will be a problem but the zip ties could be. If you bundle wires too tight and you have many of these points it can degrade the KV of the wire. The zip ties are OK just...

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

Brian, couldn't find what spark plugs you are using. Let me know and I can send you another cap like you are using on the left cylinder.
