    Nothing Lasts Forever

In response to Richard, this is Halifax NS which is a shipping center, international port, has a big shipyard, local aerospace industry, 2 airports, military airport and naval yard and dozens of smaller shops that do jobber work so theres a lively industrial machining base feeding the scrap...

    Nothing Lasts Forever

Thankfully here in Nova Scotia the scrap yard I deal with is super friendly and glad to sell metal . Brass runs around 3 dollars a pound, aluminum is about a buck, and carbide is 15, often for unused bits . They also save interesting brass artifacts for me and over the years I have collected...

What have you been doing today?

hi folks: as a veterinarian who has worked with birds for 40 odd years, we frequently see dead/dying small birds like budgies and cockatiels with severe respiratory distress after someone has burned a teflon frying pan, which releases PTFE fumes which are toxic to respiratory epithelium, so my...

    Preserve spare tools

hi all: I have been using microcrystalline wax from Lee Valley tools, called Renascence wax as well under another brand. It is an inexpensive white coloured paste consistency museum grade product and a thin coat rubbed on will keep oxides from forming. I also use it to finish metal projects...

    Cratex magic

hi modellers: Some of the most beautiful engineering is curved and assymetric in some parts while linear with undercuts and thousands of an inch in other dimensions, hence hard to polish other than paper and elbow grease. Attached are some images of a built up soldered "shovel'. This was the...

18 Pounder QF Mk 1 Cannon model 1:8 scale

Thanks Emconut. Hundreds of hours, I gave up trying to track it but probably 4 to 500 would be about right.I believe Zane Palmer of Palmers Armory is doing a build of the similar 13 Lb QF cannon- over 1100 parts in it. He is definitely the Faberge of cannon builders imo. best regards Chris

18 Pounder QF Mk 1 Cannon model 1:8 scale

hi folks: As a frequent lurker and learning much from the HMEM community I wanted to share this project. Its not exactly a working engine but it is a working breech loading cannon and was made in the absence of any plans, pretty much by extrapolating from photos and a local cannon I could take...

in your opinon, what is the youngest age for someone to use a mamod or similar steam toy?

thanks Del, All great thoughts . There is definitely a learning curve when you hit about 8-10 years old and want to start carving wood, machining things and with that comes risk, especially now when the schools have largely eliminated what used to be called "industrial arts". I was lucky to...

    Any suggested gear cutting sets?

Hi Nautilus: I have been a lurker on HMEM for years and recently got into gear cutting. I self taught and avoided a lot of the complexity, someday I hope to have a fuller understanding but was able to cut useable gears in brass and aluminum with a little prep work and without advanced math...
