The man with stainless steel knees---off topic a bit

Sounds like you're doing great. I had one knee replaced six years ago, the other one a little over a year ago. Latest one is still a bit stiff, but the more I walk and use it, the better it works. My biggest suggestion is DO NOT STOP THE THERAPY!! And do more if you're comfortable with it. I...

    Tangential tooling

I got one of those several years ago. I thought they worked pretty good. Jon K

My version of a Die Filer From Bar Stock

Great looking filer. I'm in the process of building one, much like you, look at this one, look at that one, and modify everything to fit my fantasies (needs, material on hand!). What did you use for a motor?? Thanks, Jon K

    Newbie from North Dakota

Where in ND are you?? I'm in Billings Mt, and we get to Bismarck from time to time. If you're any where's near Estevan or Rapid City, I strongly recommend you go. Those guys don't make engines and such, they're making jewelry!!! The craftmanship astounding!! As far as learning, I figure I...

    Sandblaster!!!

Great buy!! On some of the blasters, you can buy a clear sticky piece of whatever it is and it sticks to the inside of the "glass". When it gets hard to see through, you just peel it off and put on a new clear piece.

Not an engine! More a "function model" of a machine.

Yes, Very impressive!! Encourages me to get going on some crane plans I have!! Jon K

Arrange and classify metals in the shop

Looks good. We each have our own solutions. As I said before, I have three, 3 ft. eave troughs with my smaller brass rods, hex and small flat bar in them. One of the troughs has small steel rods, hex, and such. Out in the "big shop" I have some shelving similar to Costco shelving, but...

    Cutting oils

I agree, but I have the stuff (somewhere) so I thought I'd give it a try.

    Cutting oils

Not sure where else to post this: I ran across some "recipes" for homemade cutting oils/fluids in some older posts here. Some interesting things out there. Anyway, my thoughts are about using raw crude oil for a threading oil. Seems like I heard/read that crude oil was/is a good cutting fluid...

Arrange and classify metals in the shop

This is what works for me: I put three (so far) 3 ft. lengths of plastic rain gutter on the wall on shelf brackets for my small brass stock. One has 1/4" and smaller rods/squares/tube etc. The second one has over 1/4" up to 1/2" rods/squares/tube etc. The third one has OS.... Other Stuff...

Gerry's Beam Engine Imperial Frame Drawings needed

I believe I have those plans someplace, the question is where. I think mine are in imperial. Let me do some searching.

Cutting oils What do you use?

Some time ago, someone told me that raw crude oil was a good machining cutting oil. Long story short, I have a gallon of Bakken crude I use SPARINGLY!!! Yes, it is good, but it smells to high Heaven!!! I believe someone told me it is because of the Sulphur in the oil. When I'm not using it...

What have you been doing today?

I would suggest just keep running it on compressed air. Simple, easy, safe. I have two steam tractors I'll never fire. You have to stay with them all the time using steam. I built a "stationary road" that I can put one tractor at a time on, basically two rollers that the drivers sit on. Just...

2023 Black Hills Model Engineering Show - 9/24/23 Update

Thanks for the pic's. I've been there a couple times and I need to go again. Those guys don't make models, they make jewelry!!! Maybe I'll make it next year, as the date seems to be a week later. Should be done cutting corn and before beet digging!!

    What is it?

The small pointed ones look like something you would use to transfer hole marking to another piece. Screw them to a stud that needs to be mated to another piece. Lay the piece that needs the holes on the pointed tips and lightly tap on each one to make a mark. Then center punch the new...

    For Sale Model railroad rail

No, sorry, I don't. The kids are doing clean-up. I'm not even sure where to look to find a price. Do a google thing I guess. I'll do some checking and see what I come up with. Thanks for asking. Jon P.S. Do you know what it might be worth?

    For Sale Model railroad rail

A friend of mine is downsizing. He had a miniature Railroad at one time, that is all gone. However, he has around 900 feet of small aluminum rail for sale. Never been used as far as I know. Still all bundled up with angle bars and hardware. I am not familiar with such things, so here are the...

After 9 years, this engine is completed, and working.

I like the multi-sized pully you have on the output shaft. I never thought of that. GreenTwin, I agree with stepping away from a project for a while. I usually have 3-4 projects going at once. I get stuck or tired of one, and move to another for a while.
